I am planning to list this ring on eBay but I have no idea how to describe it accurately or what category to list it in. Also, what do think a fair opening bid would be?
It has 14K engraved on the inside of the band. The stones are definitely not real diamonds. They are probably cubic zirconia. Is there a way to tell for sure? I was told this ring was custom made. Is there any way to tell that for sure? The size, oddly enough, is approximately 7 1/4.
Also, does this JPG show enough detail? It is actually a scan. Try as I might, I could not get a clear detailed picture with my 2.3 meg digital camera.
Difficult to tell from a photo. The stones may be cubic zirconia, or they may be white topaz or white sapphire, which are also used in place of diamonds.
Your best bet, if you really don't know gemstones, is to take it to a jeweler (and not one of those big chain stores, either).
I did this with some colored gemstones that someone gave me. I was afraid they might be very expensive, and if so, I was unwilling to keep them, as the giver could not really have afforded to give them away.
My jeweler looked at them and quickly identified them. (They were real, but not terribly expensive, so I did keep them.)
The last person to whom I told this story had found a pair of what she thought were big CZ studs in a box lot of costume jewelry, and we "talked" in e-mail about how to tell, what to look for with a loupe, and so on. She was planning to list them, and wanted to represent them accurately.
She wound up taking them to her jeweler, where she learned they were big honkin' diamonds, about three carats each, and not fakes at all!
HTH. Good luck!
(edited for typo, and to add that my friend added those diamonds to her personal collection)
