I know this is not eBay related, but I need
some help....computer problem when I turn on
my computer this is what I get:
While initializing device VKD
Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.
When we restart we get the same message. Anyone with computer knowledge????
My computer guy is not familar with what VKD is, he suggests is to wipe out system and reload windows start from scratch...which means loose everything. If we have to ok, but would really like to see if we can find out what this message means first if possible. Right now I am on another computer as mine will not go past the message above.
Anyone...someone....ideas????

Did you just upgrade Mister Lister? I did this the end of last week, and it crapped out not one, but TWO of my computers.
I didn't have to do a disk format & reinstall, the Windows 98 refresh worked. There's something in Mr.L that's screwing up the Windows 98 boot routines.
If that isn't it, I'm sorry, but I can't help. Good luck!

No I don't use Mister Lister. Didn't not
update or add anything. Everything was fine
yesterday and last night. Today fliped the switch to on and my post above is all we get.
Anyone else, please?

Recently I had another error message that
kept Windows 98 from loading....after a search
on the Internet,a "fix" was found....So I just did a search for your error message and
did find help for you...I have no idea how to do a clickable link for you here,so you'll have to copy and paste it...has something to do with the keyboard...

There is one quick thing you can you can try before reformating your computer.
Check To make sure your keyboard conection is tight in fact if you happen to have a different keyboard plug it in and try booting up.
I know it sounds odd but when you have a bad keyboard or its not connected well and shorting you can get all kinds of odd problems and errors.
second you can try booting to dos and running scandisk see if that sorts out the problem.
Third try booting with your emergency boot disk .
if all of this fails you will more then likely have to try and restore windows because .VKD and other files of the like are vitual drivers and window has thousands of them no way of knowing where or what program its missing from.
if you are running an old version of windows98 or 95 you may well be able to fix the problem with a win98 upgrade CD and not actually have to reformat or lose any programs or information on your hard drive.

dman...your good!!!!you hit the nail on the head, just got an answer back from emachines..yes, it is a keyboard error. They instructed to blow out keyboard and reset the keyboard and mouse--now we just have to figure it out from here. Thanks everyone
