I'm torn between leaving a positive and a neutral. I just got a package that smelled of cigarette smoke when I opened it up. It wasn't so bad that it permeated the whole room, but my smoke-sensitive nose noticed it immediately. Fortunately, the item in question was a china plate, so I washed it right away to get rid of the smell and I took the box and packing material out to the trash can right away.
The seller has been very pleasant in e-mails, and I have no other complaints about the transaction. (BTW the TOS said nothing about a smoking or smoke-free home.) Something like this just irritates me because I'm very sensitive to cigarette smoke (thank GOODNESS I live in a city that bans smoking EVERYWHERE indoors!).
Do I leave a neutral, or do I give him a positive with a note that packing smelled of cigarette smoke?

Under these circumstances I'd leave a positive. :0)
And for the record I don't smoke and can't stand the smell either.

I would leave a positive, but also (nicely) email the seller and let them know what I thought about the smoke smell. Smokers should mention the fact that the items come from a smoking environment in their auction.

If all other aspects of the transaction went well then they deserve a positive. If you are sensitive to cigarette smoke, then maybe you should be asking the sellers before you bid (or at least before they ship it).
I think that even considering a neutral would be just plain silly. Don't be too picky. They probably don't even realize that the plate smelled, they're too used to it.

Definite positive!
Maybe the postal carrier smokes.
I would only mention smoke free if it was an item effected by smoke (IE cloths, Beenies, bedding and such)
Since I smoke I keep my ebay items in the designated no smoking rooms. Not to mention seal all items in zipper bags.
I'm only allowed to smoke in the office.
I had a buyer ask me if a ring was from a smoke free home I had to laugh it's a sterling silver ring.

Thanks very much for weighing in, folks. I won't mention it in the feedback since the smell didn't end up affecting the item, but I will let the seller know (nicely) in my "item received" e-mail that his packing materials smell of smoke (it wasn't the postal carrier, 'cause the box didn't smell until I opened it).
I sure would be ticked off if this were a non-washable item!
