I purchased an item that was obviously packed wrong. One half of the item was packed very well, but the other end (which i think the seller thought was more durable) poked through the box and therefore crushed the other end! When I emailed the seller I never mentioned this for fear of sounding accusatory. I just basically said we can't use the item as is, so how did they want to handle the return? When I purchased he said he would pay for insurance (which I don't think UPS will honor the claim after they see the box). It's been 27 hours since I emailed and haven't heard anything. How much longer would you wait before sending a second email? I know they may be out of town or something and didn't want to sound rude or obnoxious by emailing again and again and again, but I would like an answer. Thanx!

Interesting situation! Just yesterday I received something broken that I had purchased on ebay. The seller did such a horrible job of packing that, of course, it arrived absolutely pulverized. This was a very vulnerable and breakable item too. I work part time at a place that gives me access to the merchant portion of the post office so I asked them about recourse. (Incidentally, one of the supervisors back there watched me open the box) Even though they were well aware that it broke because it was not well packed, they all advised me that the claim would still be paid (for obvious common sense reasons).

I emailed the seller and in her mind she packed it well. I have no idea how she figures that because I would not even send out a non-breakable packed that badly but I don't believe it would behoove me to argue the point with her because she was so sure that she packed it very well. whatever...

They also told me that claims have gone through the roof since ebay got so popular because there are so many people out there sending stuff with no idea how to pack it. Maybe there should be a class!

PS...With UPS there is $100 ins coverage included in the shipping rates so, unless it was valued above that, they didn't even pay for insurance. Also I find that on amounts less than $100 they (UPS) seldom squabble and just pay it. Good luck!

sharkbaby's right--UPS would probably just pay on it. They'll ask you to save the box and packing IN CASE they want to inspect it, but I did a claim once for two separate boxes at the same time ($200 claim) and they didn't come out to inspect.

Without eBay, I might have a real life...
