I finally got a second phone line installed this week and it works fine for calling out on a telephone, and it also works for a regular dial-up connection on the computer. However, I can't dial into any AOL access number using it! I keep getting an error message that the "number dialed is busy," no matter what number it is. I can reach these same AOL numbers fine on the same phone line by using a telephone.

My computer can also reach the AOL access numbers just fine using my first phone line (and the same AOL software), but not my second phone line. This is very strange!

I've already contacted AOL support and got a message filled with lots of smileys and cute pictures but no information which would help me solve the problem. I also contacted the phone company, who was as mystified as I am. Has anyone here experienced this or anything similar?

I realize the solution may be to ditch AOL. But for some reason my husband views it as some kind of secure lifeline.

Hi, I've never used AOL but did have a similar problem with AT&T once.

When I had my second phone line installed, since it was exclusively for my computer, it did not have call waiting on it.

My dial up was configured for a line with call wiating and I could not connect using my new second line until I made the necessary changes in setup.

Don't know if this applies here or not. Hope it helps you out.

Sandvet, yes! That must be it! AOL is set up to disable call waiting before dialing out. I'm sure that's the problem, and I'll change it tonight.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!

I knew one of the smart people here would know the answer.

It is a very common problem. To edit your numbers do this:

On the sign on screen:
click on setup and then expert setup.
On the locations tab,
highlight the first number and click on edit.
Uncheck the box that says dial *70 and click okay and do each one the same way.

I would be more concerned about your husband's problems than your AOL problems.
I would dump both of them and get a REAL ISP.

LOL... yeah, hubby has some deep-seated emotional difficulties involving Internet connectivity. But I'm stuck with him. He's my cats' daddy.
