I purchased a beautiful piece of glassware that has been broken and poorly repaired. Is there a way to weaken or disolve old glue?

It depends on the type of glue, but try nail polish remover first. It's a good solvent (acetone) and you probably have some lying around the house (if you're female that is). If it's going to work at all, the glue should start to feel tacky or soft pretty quickly.
Let us know and if not maybe we can think of something else.

Fantastic product in a blue spray can with orange lid (sold at many home grocery stores) called 'It's Off'.
I swear by it. Removes any adhesive.

I don't know about the flashed on gold. Would it be possible to try a very tiny space that doesn't show first? If the gold is a type of paint, acetone could harm it further.

Just remember that these solvents may be harmful to plastic. Most of them will dissolve the plastic if left or rub on the item. So to readers trying this on non-glass items, make sure you test on a small area before applying.

Sometimes, merely soaking in water will dissolve or loosen old glue...depends on the type. Just soak your glass piece in lukewarm water overnight, and see what happens.
You can always experiment with solvents, if that doesn't work. I always believe in trying the least drastic methods first...
