I know some of you probably won't be very impressed, but I am anyway.
I stopped by this antique/someone else's treasures place this morning. I went through the whole place just browsing. They had some just plain junk (IMO) and then they had some really good stuff. (they knew it too!!)
Anyway, when I just about to leave I saw this box of what looked like old magazines of some sort. I had already passed up a couple of old MAD magazines, but I thought, what the heck and decided to look in the box anyway.
The box was stacked past the rim with National Geographic's. Dating in the 1930's and 40's. Some newer.
I don't know if they are worth a penny to anyone else, but they certainly are a treasure to me! I love National Geographic.
I plan to read through them, but I don't know if I really want to keep them forever. Have any of you ever tried to sell any of these and if so how did it work out for you?

I have never tried to sell them, but I buy them. I have won many NG auctions on ebay. But then again I usually don't have much competition. The ending price is usually low. But the earlier they are, the higher the selling price. They become more in demand. Those from the 30's and earlier might make you some money. At least what you paid for them, but I'd say more.

there was a long thread on these about a week or so ago. look at the ads in them, the best. heisey glassware, car ads, camera ads. do a search on heisey and you should be able to find the thread. i will try to find it and give you the thread number
great find
Found it: the thread was "how to sell these"
just do search at bottom of ebay outlook page, ask for heisey ads and put a check in the box for message center, this will pull it up.

incidently.... one more thing to add that's not in that thread! BE CAREFUL cutting the ads!!! I wasn't paying close attention last weekend and ended up cutting my finger by accident! It resulted in 8 stiches and probably a month or two worth of recovery. Just make sure you keep your mind focused on what you're doing!

I went back and looked at the April thread on this topic. I would like to learn more about the topic of collectible ads. Can anyone point me to a place to read more? I'm a librarian who, until recently, bought books on all sorts of collectibles for our library, and I can't remember ever seeing anything in book form on ads specifically. I therefore assume that magazine ads are simply a category of collectibles within a broader theme, like the Heisy glass?

I started checking ebay sales after the April thread and some of them sell for pretty decent money, depending on subject matter and what else is in the picture, ie...fashions, people, hotels, etc.
keziak, I have never seen a book on these either. I am always interested in any mention of heisey since I was born and raised here where it was made. Many of my relatives worked for the factory. For that reason alone these ads interest me.
eauctionmgt, owweeeee!! I hope it heals quickly. can you file workers comp?

A couple of years ago, I sold a National Geographic on ebay. It was from the 1930's, don't remember just what year. To my surprise (and delight), it brought something like $70.00. The buyer explained he bid so high because the magazine contained a map drawn by an illustrator named Wyeth. He advised me to check similar era NG for maps by Wyeth, said most were valuable. Unfortunatly, the maps have been missing on others I have found from that era.

One of mine I know has map. Others may. I will have to check that out. Also make sure I write a really good description.
70.00! Now that would make my day! I doubt I could be that lucky.

Check the back of the book and see if there are coke ads, they are very collectable especially the ones with Santa Claus...I can't remember the dates but I have quite a few..
Thanks for your sympathy! Unfortunately, I did it at home and can't get workers comp. My RL job is as a computer technician... so it's been a little rough typing with 9 fingers... but my boss has been great about it.
Keziak:
I too have never seen a good book on collecting magazine advertisements. Probably a good opportunity out there for someone to write one! Let me know if you stumble accross one though!
WS7411:
Good point about the maps... although I didn't realize that certain illustrators brought more money then others! I wish I had included illustrator names on the lot of National Geographic maps I just launched... oh well.. live and learn!
