O.k., deep breath...I received an email today saying, "Did my item come back to you because I have not received it, it's been 5 1/2 months."
I wrote back asking WHAT item? They told me the item, I said I have NEVER sold ANYHTING like that. Then they asked me to tell them WHAT item they bought from me so they could "set it aside".
I asked for their eBay Id, they didnot give it to me. I said that I have no way of finding WHAT tiem they bought unless I go into every closed auction I have and look for their email address. Which is several hundred auctions.
The last email I recieved said, "Sorry if this is a bother but you would do the same thing if someone stole your money".
Deep breath...Now WHAT am I supposed to do? I have never sold anything remotely close to what they are referring to.

Tell them you will be more than happy to help, that you file everything by auction number and if they will give you the auction number, you will look for it.
Not my name on ebay.

Throw the ball back into their court.
Tell them you'll be glad to investigate the matter if they can provide you with their ebay ID and a copy of the check/money order used to pay you.
If this is enough money worth bothering about, they should be able to supply you with these.
I'm assuming, of course, that you really don't think you've done anything wrong here, so I'm proposing a business-like response that is designed to seem reasonable and at the same time discourage this seemingly-random request (and it may even be an attempt to scam you...).

I forgot, they did give me the item number. My problem is that when I said I didn't sell the item they are looking for, They said sorry, but now they want to know WHAT item they DID buy from me.

If you routinely leave feedback for your buyers, you should be able to locate the item number as long as you have the buyers ID...
Armed with the item number and your own records, you should be able to determine what you sold them.
Or did I miss something?
Or maybe your buyer isn't really a buyer after all...hmmm
Pat
edited to ask if you ran the return e-mail addy on eBay to see if a user popped up?

I just looked through my feedback from that item and nothing. i told them to look through their feedback because I leave feedback for everyone, find my name, and get me the item number from the item I SOLD them. I guess I just don't get WHY they need to know what I sold them, it wasn't the item they are missing.

Sounds like you've done all you can for now...
Time for them to take a little responsibility...
FWIW, any eBay'er who isn't willing to share their ID with a seller from whom they've purportedly purchased from is suspect in my book. I clearly identify myself in all auction correspondence, even when asking questions outside of eBay's mail system...
Guess it's time to go back to taking care of those customers who do know what they've bought from you...*G*

this *is* an odd one. according to them, 5 1/2 months later they realize the widget they bought didn't arrive, email you, for some reason thinking you're the seller. now i don't know about anyone else, but the emails i send/receive from sellers has information in it about the items i've bought. how else did this person get your email address, if not from an old email?
all this aside, you've already told them you've never sold anything like the missing widget. i suppose they may want to be reassured that they didn't buy the missing item from you, but it really is up to them to do their homework and make sure they get the right seller. what did they do, pick your email from the ones they had that came in around 5 1/2 months ago?
i wouldn't sweat it. you know you didn't sell them the missing item.
