Now if we could get rid of the pictures of people's cats, dogs, and children.
One seller had 3 tiny pictures of the items for sale and 5 pictures of her dog.
Downloading hell.

Try posting an image, ANY image and the img src= does NOT work. Period. So it appears no images will be allowed, now, about those ugly dogs and cats..........I guess it's all gone now!

Well, I don't know about the others but our 'About Me" page still will accept photos.......I just added a new one of our dog! I also checked the TOS and couldn't find anything about not adding photos to the page.
Heck, I thought that I was the only one that looked at those pages anyway!
Wrong again, I guess..........

eastwest: I think ebay might be looking at a senario where two of us members haggle it out in the street with deadly force and the possibility they could be held liable for it. Wouldn't be the first time 2 people got in a row on the web and found out accidentally that they were neighbors. Just one idea of many possible reasons.

Is this by any chance from the same artisan who carved a couple of ...uh... "remarkable" vampire bats????
Without eBay, I might have a real life...

Hello Minx, don't I wish I carved that piece! I've sold a number of FF masks on eBay over the years. I was wondering if anyone would recognize what it was?

Hi Reddeer....YUP, I admired it right off... ...and its a gorgeous one. Its the Whistler?? Right?? I have been fascinated by the history and meaning of each of the designs that I have found. The man carving them in Ohio is fascinating to talk to about them. How have you done selling those?? I have thought about it but , as you know, with the significance of them I was concerned that it would stir up some wrath. I had mine hanging off my lodge at an event last summer and it upset some people so I took it down. And then I see several websites selling them. Only not carved out in the back so they were not activated or so they said.......So I have been in a quandry as to what to do when my friend asks me to sell one. I feel better knowing that you have ... They are wonderful and a shame not to share....Minx

The example in my pic is known as "The Blower", although there is a similar mask
known as "The Whistler". The mask in your pic is a variation of "The
Doorkeeper".
Selling FF masks is starting to become very non PC in the USA. Under the Native
American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990 these masks are now considered ""sacred Objects" and many museums are now being forced to return them to the original tribes.
Here's what the Haudenosaunee have to say on the matter.
http://hometown.aol.com/miketben/miktben2.htm
There is also a small movement on eBay that has been emailing Safe Harbor requesting these mask auctions be shut down. The masks I sell are carved by long time Iroquois Native artists, on the reserve, and are sanctioned by the Canadian
reserve they reside on.
It's 100% legal, and there isn't a damn thing that SH or the Iroquois leaders in the USA can do or say about it. The masks are sold to me directly from the reserve Arts & Crafts reps themselves.
I expect that because my masks are clearly marked & tagged as originating in
Canada, as I well as the fact that I reside in Canada, SH has not acted on any complaints, if in fact there were any.
Masks originating in the US could be not only yanked by SH, but might also fall under the
Repatriation act of 1990.

And here's what happened at Sotheby's back in 1993 when they attempted to sell some of these FF masks.

Hi Reddeer...thanks for the info. Most of the info concerning the selling I already knew....and I had heard that SH was getting involved in this. Which is why I have delayed making a decision for my friend. What does surprise me is the sites I found that do sell these and they are obviously made strictly for this "tourist trade" mentality. Most people have no idea what they are or the significance...they use them for wall hangers....... . I was at a Native Conference last year and we put 6 different masks on a display table strictly for show and the response was great. Ya know, I almost said "blower" when I tried to guess yours and then I changed my mind....should have stayed with it. Its a nice one. Anyway, thanks for the info and the pic...its nice.

I know what you mean about the "tourist trade mentality", and most of the ones I've seen being sold online are of poor quality, and some are most definately not made by Iroquois artists.
In all fairness to the carvers who make the masks I've sold, they all come complete with a hang tag that states:
"This is an Iroquois FALSE FACE. A
ceremonial dance mask worn to cure mankind of certain afflictions, to prevent future
disease, and when put outdoors- to split destructive winds. Although this Helper has
not been blessed it would be grossly improper to use him in a simulated dance or any
other spurious manner. You have obtained something with great meaning to the
Iroquois - do not abuse it!"
They also have another tag that contains the
name of the style of mask, the name of the maker/artist, the name of the Nation, and the Clan.
If I could afford to, I'd have kept them all.
As always, nice chattin with ya.
