When do most of you leave feedback? Is it right when you recieve payment or after you know the customer recieved shipment and they aren't going to give you heck for something totally unreasonable. I usually leave feedback as soon as I recieve payment. What about you? PS how do you get those cool smiley faces to show up here?

As a seller, I leave feedback after the transaction is complete - which to me is when the buyer lets me know they received the item ok, or after they leave me feedback.
As a buyer, I leave feedback as soon as I receive the item.

As a seller, I leave feedback after feedback has been left for me. I do this for several reasons.
1) It lets me know the transaction has been successfully completed. While there is much disagreement on this topic with sellers, I firmly believe that the transaction is not complete until the bidder is happy. The only way I can be 100% assurred that they are satisfied is if they leave me feedback.
2) I use vrane's easy-feedback widget to reciprocate positive feedback in batches. This saves me time, and I can pass the savings on to my customers.
3) Call me petty... but if a bidder is going to leave me negative feedback without trying to work with me, I want to be able to leave them a negative feedback in return. If a bidder doesn't put the effort in to seek resolution of a problem, I don't think they deserve positive feedback. Auctions are a two-way street. You need communication from the seller to the bidder AND from the bidder to the seller. How is the seller supposed to fix a problem if the bidder never lets them know there IS a problem?
Those are my reasons behind my feedback policy. While I understand that not everybody will agree with it, I must say that it works very well for both myself and my customers.

When the buyer eMails that they have received the package and there is nothing else required of either of us.
I conclude the trade by leaving feedback... REGARDLESS of whether or not my trading partner wishes to volunteer any feedback comments for me.
Currently, I'm holding a $15.00 NSF check on an item that was shipped 2 weeks ago. The "winner" never eMailed to notify me that the package arrived. (they have probably avoided me due to the knowledge that their check was worthless)... BUT, because they never eMailed me that the item arrived, I have not yet left feedback. This is good... because we STILL have the opportunity to complete the trade in a POSITIVE way, as long as payment for the NSF check PLUS the $5.00 fee my bank charged me for depositing the worthless piece of paper is handled via MONEY ORDER in a timely manner.
The transaction is NOT over when payment arrives.
ALSO... in the event of loss or postal damage, insurance claims need to be initiated on the BUYERS end.
That's why I believe the trade is NOT complete until the item arrives safely to the buyer and the buyer notifies the seller that they are satisfied with the transaction.

Folks, we are NEVER going to agree on this issue.
Some leave it when the payment is received.
Some leave it when the buyer notifies them the item has been received.
Some leave it once the buyer has left it for them.
There is NO one correct way. Each buyer/seller has to make their own decisions on when to leave feedback & not expect that everyone else is going to do it the same way.

I enter feedback for my customers as soon as I have their cleared payment. Occasionally I'll wait until the buyer lets me know that he or she received the item to enter feedback, but only if the buyer's email seemed a bit rude or terse when we were exchanging payment/shipping information.
As a buyer, I usually refuse to enter feedback before the seller does. When the shipment arrives, and if I haven't received feedback yet, I'll send email saying something like "I received the item and I'm thrilled with it. I look forward to returning your positive feedback. I'll watch my number. Thanks!"
I leave feedback when I receive the item in the advertised condition, even if the seller has not left me feedback. I note in my e-mail to the seller that I have received the item and I'm very happy with it, and oh by the way I've left you positive feedback. I have an 89% feedback return rate, and I never have to "ask" for feedback.
The few times there have been problems or I had to send it back, I left feedback upon receipt of a refund. I've never had to leave negative feedback for anyone, and I only left one neutral for slow shipping (and he retaliated with a neutral, even though I used PayPal only a few hours after the auction ended).
As a seller:
If I have a good feeling about the customer, I'll leave feedback when I mail the item. I know I pack carefully, and my items are nearly always insured. Most of the time, however, I leave feedback when the buyer tells me they received it.
I know some sellers have been burned and now won't leave feedback until they verify that the customer received the item. For those of you who want to start doing that, here's a possible paragraph for your TOS, EOA, or shipping notice. The second one will help prevent buyers from bugging you about leaving feedback 10 seconds after they leave theirs:
1.I love leaving positive feedback for my customers! Since feedback should reflect the entire transaction, I will gladly leave it for you as soon as you let me know you receive your item and are happy with it. If you have any dissatisfaction, please let me know immediately so I can solve the problem.
2.We love leaving positive feedback! Please e-mail us when you receive your item so we know that the transaction is complete. So that we can spend more time helping our customers and shipping promptly, our policy is to leave feedback on a monthly basis. We want you to be satisfied with your purchase, so please let us know immediately if you have any problems.
I leave feedback when I am satisfied with the product. This means after using or testing it. In some cases, the seller may not get feedback until weeks or months later.

Selling - Upon receipt of payment (unless the buyer was a PITA or had me ship to other than a paypal verified address). Buying - upon receipt of the item. I hope for and expect the best of all my transactions. I'm comfortable with my service and items as a seller and pay promptly as a buyer - so haven't found it necessary to wait. I've had upwards of 1100 transactions and have 2 negs - from the same person w/2 ids and 2 neutrals - one retaliatory & one in error back when a person could leave more than one per transaction.
