After 10 days, I left postive feedback, shipped item. On the 11th day, a check bounced. My bank charges me when I get a bounced check.
The person took their time in paying, and now I can't file NPB through ebay.
Any advice in trying to get the money out of the people for a $7 Christian CD?
I doubt I'll ever see the money, but it doesn't seem people should be able to do this either.
Should I write a letter to them? Postcard so their postman can see it or ???

Why can't you fill out the NPB alert? Has it been more than 45 days since the close of the auction?

Another reason why it's a good idea to delay shipping (by just a few days) of items being paid for with a check... AND then wait for eMail from the buyer confirming that the item has arrived.
Usually by this time, THEY would know whether or not their check cleared too...
The same thing happened to me the other day. I had not heard from the buyer that they received the item and that they were pleased with our transaction.... SOOooo I hadn't yet left any feedback.
Got the notice from my bank with the NSF check and the additional fee my bank charged me ($5.00) for depositing the worthless check... I was able to kindly eMail the buyer and notify them of the problem... suggesting the I am still willing to conclude out trade in a POSITIVE way if they could send the total amount ( including the $5.00 fee I incurred ) via Money Order right away.
I received a friendly eMail this morning that Money Order is on the way "Immediately" and they were very glad that they were given the chance to work it out before exchanging feedback.
- and SO AM I... since I'd much rather just have them honor their bid.
If you've already shipped AND you've already left Positive Feedback... there's not much motivation on your trading partners side to do the right thing. Email them Kindly and express your desire to resolve this so that you don't have to file for NPB on the transaction - and see what their response is.
GOOD LUCK to you.

I had a bounced check 30 days after I put it in the bank. First I emailed the customer. I couldn't get in touch with them, so I got their contact info and called. They weren't home so I left a message. A week later I received a call from their daughter. The customer was her mother and was in the hospital (reason why no one answered email or phone). She apologized about the check and as I requested, sent a money order for the total amount plus the $3.00 my bank charged me. Not all people bounce checks for fun, it happens to everyone at least once in their life.

I've had four bounced checks since I started selling on eBay in 1999. All were for small amounts of money ($11 to $25).
And I've had bounced check stories end both ways;
with apologetic bidders sending new payment, including my costs, right away --- and total losers who, it turns out, had done this to multiple eBay sellers at once and could not care less if you left negative feedback.
I always start by writing a nice e-mail to let them know the check has bounced and how much they need to send me to cover everything.
I send one more notice if I don't receive an answer to the first notice.
If I'm feeling lucky, I'll redeposit the check -- right after the 1st or the 15th of the month (paydays for a lot of folks).
My bank only charges me $5 if it bounces again.
If it's a small amount and not worth a second $5 investment -- or I'm not feeling vindictive enough to cost the sender a 2nd bounced check fee -- I simply write it off as a bad debt and move on.

jenndiggy1 - My experience with a bounced check was that my buyer was very embarassed this had happened. He had emailed me when his bank notified him, and before I'd received the notice from my bank. Sent me a MO right away.
If I were you, I'd send a polite email and ask for a MO (or online pymt.) for the item amount and your bank fees. If you don't hear back, then maybe give them a telephone call.
Hopefully this buyer is honest and will reimburse you quickly.

jenndiggy1: I have recently had a bidder who paid with a rubber check. By the time they sent the check, I sent the item, the check bounced, they promised a money order replacement, etc. the time had lapsed to file for my FVF from eBay.
I wrote to [email protected] outlining the auction # and a short note about how the check had bounced and the time had expired. They manually processed my request and the credit appeared on my next statement.

I'd write to the bidder and ask nicely for replacement funds (plus enough to cover the bounced check fee), and I'd set a deadline for receiving payment which would allow enough time to file an NPB alert and FVF refund request. I'd frame the email as an "I'm sure you had no idea that would happen!" note, not a "You're trying to cheat me" note.
I filed for return of a final value fee earlier this week, and I think I saw "bounced check" or something similar as a reason for requesting a fee refund. So you still have that option.

I sell low value lots World Wide and have never had a bounced check. As UK Banks charge their customers some $35 for a bounced cheque, I guess this is no suprise.

Suggestion: Shop around for your checking account. I have a business account at a local bank (since 1993) and they never charge for a returned deposit item. I doubt that they're the only bank in the nation with this policy!

I just had my first rubber check TODAY for a whopping $125. I cashed it on April 27 and it took 3 weeks to complete. I emailed the guy and he says he is sending a money order overnight....yeah we'll see. I was freaked because my lovely bank took it out of my other checking account that I only use for special purposes and it overdrew it by a few dollars. So I had the bank mess and then I have to attempt to get the money back. He paid 2 weeks late and since it was for an auction that hadn't closed with the reserve and he still bought it for the reserve after the auction...ebay won't touch it if he doesn't pay. That is the tough breaks.
Good luck to ya!

They seemed really sorry, but its been ample time for them to get a money order to me, so I think I can kiss the money goodbye as well as the CD.
As for banking, there are only 2 banks in my town, and the one I bank at has by far the better checking policy. It would be odd to get an account in the next town, as it is in a different state!

I wish you the best with this type of mess! I, on the other hand, had a rotten experience with a buyer down in Tampa.
After a $12 check was sent and deposited, I shipped his cups & saucers and left pos feedback. About 10 days later, got his check back with a stopped payment notice. He gave a short, rather nasty explanation to my email inquiry, saying that he stopped payment because some checks were stolen. (Sure, stop payment on your legit checks!!) I then requested payment by MO plus the $3.00 my bank charges for bad check deposits. So what do I get? Another check for $12 (no additional $3.00 in sight). He said that he didn't feel that he owed the bank charges. So it's my fault that he stopped payment on what was a legitimate check??
What made this especially bad was that he only paid $6.00 bid price. The rest was shipping for heavy china. Needless to say, I lost every which way on this one. Thank GOD it was a low dollar item!
