My jewelry items normally sell $5-$35 sometimes I luck out and get a big ticket item, as a fluke.

I recently sold a widget that closed at $305 the high bidder stated he didn't want to buy it because it wasn't what he thought. I sent an offer to the next 3 bidders. Then a funny thing happened the next 2 high bidders both replied to the offer with sorry I no longer want the item. But both replies came in same type exact same wording both with aol addresses so I investigated and both are on same aol account. One account had been open for 2 years with 0 feedback. Always bidding on others auction.

He then emails me 2 weeks later and offers $125 for the item.

I relisted in a btter category and it sits at $306 all week today I notice the bid was $509 so I look at the high bidder 0 feedback account opened today.

I canceled the bid and blocked the bidder. Something sneaky going on here. I think I'm even going to close it 5 minutes early to avoid a snipe by BRAND NEW bidder.

I think these 2 or 3 ID's or bidders raise the prices up then back out and offer a ton less.

Any suggestions?
Joe B

Before relisting I blocked the deadbeat and 2 questionable bidders.

I wouldn't have canceled the bid just because it was a new user with 0 feedback. Some of these are big spenders. You might very well have just thrown $200 away.

Yeah but he just signed up today, after the last item went so high (it came in a lot of jewelry from an auction) I had a dealer look at it and they said it was worth $250 to 300.
I also did a info request and this bidder was in same zip as other 2 questionable bidders.

I think it is strange also. I too have encountered a few things that were suspious such as in this instance. I too think that I would have let the bid go and offered it to the underbidder if it fell through. I have sold some high end items to brand new bidders, and have also had some bid, then disappear.

Good Luck

THAT would make me wonder, but I probably wouldn't have pulled their info in the first place...

I do remember one Item I got deadbeated on 3 times in a row. I thought something strange was going on with it (like maybe someone wanted it, but keep getting bid up higher than they wanted, so they deadbeated, and bid with a different ID next time hoping it would go cheap.). I waited about 6 months and listed it again, and sold it.

I hope you posted negative feedback.

Write everything down, including the bidder ids and your suspicion of shill bidding, and send it to safeharbor. It happened to me and safeharbor suspended the bozo.

Can you still do a request for information on the three bidders? See if they come back to the same user- now that would be spooky!

The other odd thing was there maximum bid was outrageous.

The thing that ticked me off was the guy who was the high bidder who claimed the y bid by accident said oh that is much too high I thought it was something different, you will be lucky to get $125.

The n the second high 2nd (and 3rd) bidder emails me and asks if I'll sell for $125.

This is also a type of widget I'm not real familiar with.

After 4 years on Ebay sometimes you just get that gut feeling someones jerking your chain.

Twinsoft:

It is called bid shielding. Shilling is when the seller bids on his own auctions. Shielding is when a bidder (with two or more other ID's) bids an item outrageously high, then cancels the two high bids, leaving his lowball bid intact.

DEFINATELY report it will all information available.

Sounds like someone's yanking the chain.

Usually there's some reason.

This guy is upset because last time he decided he didn't want the item and got PO'd when I filed NPB & FVF.

I blocked him from my auctions now I just need to get the other bidders info if they are the same guy I can get them NARU'D

kidsfeet, in my case it was auction interference but you are right, this sounds like bid shielding.
