i use either:
AIRMAIL LETTER POST
or
SURFACE LETTER-POST
for small packages to Europe -- these are the old "SMALL-PACKET" types.

I believe packages under 2 pounds are now called Lettermail. It's replaced "Small Packet".

Yes...what Tom said. Just look at the size requirements in the far right column, to decide what to use.
I found it confusing too, at first.

Thank you all so much. Is airmail parcel faster than global priority?

Air Mail will get the package delivered in France in 4-7 days.

Just my 2c.
I'm not happy with the reliability of the Int'l cost calculator at the USPS website, the the domestic one has never let me down.
If it's not a total inconvenience, I'd wrap the package as I'm going to send it, then take it down to the PO, and have them quote me rates.
I know this is a pain for city folks who deal with busy PO's, but if you're in a smaller area where the PO isn't constantly jammed, this might be the way to go.
I've never seen any posts about the Int'l calculator being inaccurate, so it may just be me.

Global Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope (Large)--9 1/2" X 12 1/2"----3 to 5 days. $9.00
It doesn't have to be FLAT (it's called Flat-rate---not Flat shipping)--in order to mail it in one of these envelopes, it it fits and you can seal it--you can use the service. Just wrap it up protectively and then see if it fits.

Sadie -- the International calculator is never wrong -- the post office is often wrong in their quotes (depending on the clerk) and will often try to tell you "letter post" doesn't exist or some other strange story. Best to print out the applicable page and take it with you to the PO.

>the International calculator is never wrong
Don't bet the farm on it. The price you see for GXG (over night) service is ALWAYS wrong, unless you go 3 pages deeper than where the first price quote is and enter the size of the box. They use Dimentional <sp> wieght, and it is computed as W x L x H / 166 = Wieght charged. A 20 lb package might get a 40 lb charge.

If it is a small item that can fit inside the small priority mail envelope, the shipping is $4-$5. I recently sent small items to both Japan and Germany via Global Priority. The shipping was $4 and $5 depending on the whim of the clerk. I never received the same rate at the PO as I am quoted on the website calculator.

Hi - If it is any help I just mailed 10 packages of vintage nylon stocking to Paris yesterday -- They were in a big padded envelope - but had to go as a package -- regular air mail was $8.00 and Global Priority ( which is what I opted for) was $9.35 -- that was from New York State.
