I have just replaced my second scanner in the past 12 mos due to scratches on the glass --I use it constantly "take pictures" of small items and also detail ( as in marks on china etc. ) -- It is unavoidable that the glass bed gets scratched - eventually so badly that I end up saying things - like the mark is a scratch on my scanner not on the item.
Has anyone tried clear film or another sheet of glass with any success - I tried Saran Wrap but it seemed to slightly distort the images.

Try a sheet of plexi-glass and see how that turns out - it is relatively inexpensive and when it is scratched, just replace it. I would use a sheet that is larger than the glass so the edges of the plexi-glass don't end up scratching the scanner glass.
As I've never tested this, you may want to buy just one small sheet to test to make sure there are no distortions.
Good Luck!
The other idea of course would be to invest in a digital camera, but I know they are priced out of range for some folks. I love mine! (Sony).

HI -Oxford -- thanks I will try that -- I do have a digicam - but find that the scanner is invaluable for the tiny details on little items -- thanks for the advice -- dee
