How do you get the softened look on the edge of images? You know the edges are not sharp and crisp as with a regular crop. I would love to do some of my pictures like this but I don't have any idea how to achieve this effect. I use Image Expert and can't find a thing about it. Can someone tell me what the term is.
Thanks

Hi, the technique you are referring to is called "feathering." Usually you will make a selection and then feather the selection to soften the edges.
I don't know what photo editor you are using. Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro are two of the most popular. If you're on a budget, pick up a copy of Adobe PhotoDeluxe at eBay for $5-$10 bucks. It can do nearly everything Photoshop does and is great for beginners. The output quality of pictures is excellent too.
If you want to shell out a few more bucks, get a copy of Photoshop (even an older version) and a how-to book. You won't regret it.

The easiest way to get that effect with PhotoShop is to...
put your image on a seperate layer
use a "layer mask" to select the portion of the image you want to see. the layer underneath will show through so it should be the color of your background if its for the web.
then use "guassian blur" on the layer mask to diffuse the edge of the mask which will show as a "feathered" edge on the image.
if you get a book, look up "layer mask" and "guassian blur".
Using this method you can play on the mask for awhile to see how much diffusion you want without working directly on the image. Then just flatten.
