Found a blurb on this new site in "Publishers Weekly"
www.usedbookcentral.com
There is a monthly listing fee, and something about needing a vendor's license. When I did a search, the results were not arranged in any order that I could detect, a possible problem once they build inventory. Also, it wasn't clear to me how to buy the books. One record just gave a website.

I meant to add, they say they developed this site in reaction to Amazon's swallowing up of Bibliofind.

"Used Book Central initially is open to all USA based dealers. The only limitation is dealers must possess a valid vendors license and be engaged in lawful persuits. Used Book Central will attempt to open the service to dealers world wide by September 1st. "
Where I live if you don't need a "vendors license". Perhaps they mean a sales tax permit. But why should they care?
Sept 1st? Well I guess the site will sit there for three months, everyone will forget it, and we'll look for something else. It might as well say "under construction", LOL.

Since many sellers on Abebooks are not based in the US, I don't see this site as any real competition. Three months in cyber time is like three years down the drain.

What interested me in the PW article was claims that booksellers are bellyaching about Amazon fees and how "difficult" it is to use. I find that amazing...how much simpler can it get? Granted, the fees are pricey, but you can hardly beat the visability, and there is no chasing down payments.
I am interested in alternatives because I don't think monopolies are in our best interest, but it really seems to me that Amazon is a powerful tool for sellers.

I refuse to use Amazon on principle alone. I enjoyed Bibliocity and Bibliofind. I resent that they were both swallowed by huge companies. I also never use Alibris (who bought out Bibliocity). Smaller sites like Bibiliofind and Bibliocity were part of what made the internet great, in my opinion. I have no more use for large conglomerates in cyber life than I do in real life.

I found mention of this site, though can't remember for sure where. It's at http://www.bookopoly.com
I haven't dug around much but it looked rather interesting at a glance.

"Since many sellers on Abebooks are not based in the US"......
Actually, Abebooks itself is not based in the US.
From its website: "Abebooks.com (abebooks.com), a network of over 8000 independent booksellers, is a private company, registered in Victoria, B.C., Canada"

Just checked out bookopoly, and was wondering if any of you have set up there yet. It looks like it has real potential!
I was excited to see that sellers can use HTML to write their descriptions, and that there is enough space provided for a seller to actually SELL the book (like there is in an Ebay listing, for example.) On the down side, the sellers aren't taking advantage of this, at least not on the listings I actually looked at. Book browsers like to see pics of what they're getting...
what do you guys think? worth a try?

Abebooks office are located in Canada--but they also maintain a business address in the USA. The sellers are from all over the world---and unlike AMAZON they don't put up any hurdles regarding where you live in order to sell
I just read an article in B.C. Business magazine that states that 15,000 books are sold from the ABE site each day.

Hi Zazzie! I agree with you on that ONE! I still haven't got my US account up and running. TD bank lost my forms, sent me new ones, lost that one, etc and its been well over two months and I thought amazon and ebay were bad for down times! ( will probably go back to amazon for some of my romances or try marketplace though in spite of their ruining a great GREAT auction site! still can't believe how stupid they are when amazon could have been close to ebay in the running.
Maybe I should check out ABE books!!!

CAgrrl Hi, NOPE...still waiting.....I tried registering and says I have already registered...then I tried the "lost password" routine and got a page that said "Hi xxxxxxxx, we will send you your password in an email" and that was two days ago.....Not impressed with this site at all so I think I will move on
