i suppose it was only a matter of time before it happened, but this is my first
sent an item out on a wednesday, may 23rd, around 2:00 pm. just got an email from the concerned buyer, who hasn't gotten it yet and is understandably concerned. it was going from california to illinois. it *should* have gotten there saturday, or tuesday at the latest (monday being memorial day).
thank heavens she got insurance!
i see there's a 'label #' on the receipt from the post office. anyone know what that is?
what do i do next? could it be delayed because of memorial day weekend? i know we have to wait until the package is missing 30 days before filing for insurance.

Hi kittyx3...Glad I can offer YOU some advice after you were kind enough to advise me! The same thing happened to me as a Seller. I went to my post office with the number and they were able to tell me that it had never arrived at the address. Then it came back to me, noting that they had notified the addressee a few times, no response, so they returned it! We DID finally straighten it out and she DID pay for the extra postage to RE-SEND it to her! I imagine Memorial Day weekend could have also come into play! Good Luck! fawnie

Well Kitty, in my experience, this really isn't all that out of the ordinary. I always use insured first class to send my packages. I've sold and shipped hundreds of items this way. I've had only one get lost in all this time. (It turned up 60 days later.) But I must say, there have been numerous times that it has taken 2-4 weeks. Most often it is there within 7 days, but it does happen. Yes, you can submit a claim in 30 days, but I'm sure you won't have to. Hope it turns up soon!

It's been my experience priority mail can take anywhere from 2 days to 6 weeks. The PO says they can't guarantee anything.

Hi Kitty!
If you look at the small print, USPS states that priority mail averages two to three days.
Mtnmama has me beat ~ my range is from one day to three weeks.
One missing package was actually at the recipients Post Office, though.
I send everything with delivery confirmation.
Best Bet is to check out USPS.com and enter the package insurance number. It will give you a history of the package in its entirety ~ hopefully that can help you figure where it has landed!
Good Luck!

I just had an occurance of priority mail taking 12 days from Pennsylvania to California. The buyer was beginning to get very skeptical about it actually being sent even though it had the DC origination scan.
When it finally arrived there was nothing wrong. It didn't have any address problems. The buyer made another order about 2 days later and this item was sent First Class (small and light). This item took 2 days.
Priority Mail (averages 2-3 days) = 12 days
First Class Mail = 2 days
Now I'm waiting for something that should have arrived last Friday and it hasn't shown up yet. A letter sized item was sent from New Jersey to me in Pennsylvania and it's been 5 days now with no show yet.

thanks, everyone, for your help
the thing is, there's no number on the green insurance form! under 'postmark of,' there are some numbers that look like this:
xxxx
xx
tried entering those - no such number on the usps tracking system. btw, these forms say they're from feb. 1986!
then tried entering a long number called the 'label #,' which is on the other receipt (not the insurance). that number isn't in the system either.
asked the very nice postal clerk here (i'm lucky, she's a real gem), and she said 10 to 1 it's at the buyer's post office sitting on a shelf. i hope she's right!
so far, fastest priority has been one day, and this is the longest - 13 days.

Sounds like you have a Low Value insurance form. That would be all green, square and without a barcode. Those are not trackable. If the package is AWOL then you'll just end up needing to file a claim with that receipt. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I had one item that I purchased sent to me via Priority Mail. It was only going 40 miles, and it took 22 days to reach me. Be patient, the post office is far from perfect. Stay in touch with the other person, and your local post office, it will show up.

avaloncourt,
yes, that's the one. low value insurance? oh great. here i thought it was all the same insurance, just $1.10 for under $50, $2.00 for $50-$100, but that it worked the same way. sheesh.
shooters,
22 days to go 40 miles?? that's got to be a record.
fawnie,
thanks i'm hoping it's at her post office, but if not, that i get it back! worst part is, this is a brand spanking new ebayer . even sent her a little extra something as a kind of welcome. oh well, perhaps it's something simple and all will be well.

Don't despair. I had one go missing w/some one of a kind stuff in it. Mercifully the buyer was quite patient & the darn thing arrived several weeks later...beat to heck & back but it did arrive. We never did figure out what happened but all's well that ends well.
It's just the paperwork is different. They don't bother tracking the less than $50 items. The above $50 use a form with a barcode to "theoretically" track infomation on it. The post office here doesn't do an origination scan so all the item gets is delivery.

No new advice to offer, but I had a Priority package take over 4 weeks to arrive from NC to California. Thanks be the lady was very understanding!! Especially when she saw the postmark! (Became a repeat buyer!)
Sometimes even boxes like to go sightseeing, I guess!
Josie
your package must've been one of those sight-seeing ones josiecats mentioned
avaloncourt,
okay *sigh* well now i know.
the good news: buyer called her post office, and the package was there! . i feel *much* better knowing her first ebay experience didn't turn out to be a bad one.
kittyx3
edited to say, is it me, or have the aw colors changed from blue to green?
