While going through my goodwill outlet store bins today I found a wallet type purse. It is the classic initial pattern (brown with lighter LV and flower type things). It has a sewn on patch says Louis Vuitton paris made in France. My hunch is it's a fake, but can anyone give me any details to look for to tell for sure? Either way I have a cute purse and it only cost me about 20 cents. Thank you!

Are the trims (the plain leather parts) leather or fake leather? The LV brown part should be vinyl, but all the trim has to be leather. Also the lining can be a dead give-away - if it's plastic, it's a fake.

All the trim and the strap are leather, the lining is thin cloth, not plastic. What about zippers? This one is silver and says K&K?

Check out the edges and seams.
Authentic Louis Vuitton will never "cut" the actual "LV" monogram. The complete letters will be intact ~ no partial letters on any seams/corners/zippers/etc.
Does that make sense?
Can you post a PIC?
The zippers can be either plastic or silver. The pull tab you mention may be a replacement zipper ~ again, older Louis used plastic zippers on their smaller pieces and they didn't hold up very well (only lasted about ten years! teehee!)
Older LV is not embossed with serial numbers.
I'd still need a PIC.
Big time no-no to put fake Louis on eBay. Gucci, too.
Do you have a Louis Vuitton store near you? They will usually authenticate it for you (and confiscate it if it's bogus, too!).
Be careful!

One sure way to tell is the gromments (sp?) will be stamped Louis Vuitton. The inside is leather-patches(one outside and another inside) are sewn on-never glued. And the LV is always interlocking-never side by side.

There are some cut LV intitials on the seams. So, looks like I got a fake. I do have a LV botique in a Saks 5th AVE store, but it's up north about 50 miles. Oh well, I was going to keep it either way. I don't dare list it on eBay. I took some pics, I will try and get them on here. Thank you for your help!

Great advice here.
About 3 months ago I found a real one at a resale shop for $8.00. It sold on ebay for $162.50. I keep a picture of the purse next to my computer to keep my spirits up when typing descriptions for my ebay auctions.

Hi all,

To post an image here you put the following (without the *'s), before the image URL:

[*img] and then put [*/img] after the URL

To further explain:

[*img]http://imagehost.auctionwatch.com/preview/Put the first 2 letters of your AW name here/Put your entire AW name here/Put the name of the Image here[*/img]

So you'd end up with something like this (using my name as an example):

[*img]http://imagehost.auctionwatch.com/preview/sa/SaraAW/name of image.gif[*/img]

I hope you don't mind me edging in on your thread but I too have a purse that I wonder about. I have been through the fake purse thing....they send a threathening letter and all. The one I had on was leather. This one is leather and the LV is sewn on, the grommitts are marked and the inside is leather. THe handles are leather. However...when I bought it there was a small change purse with a zipper (broke) and it is vinyl on the inside. I am not sure if it was originally with the purse or added later. I am going to try to post the pic...

I will try it with .jpg instead of .gif that was shown.

Again~ I am sorry for intruding on your thread but you have called out the experts! LOL! I hope you don't mind. I am learning from this.....

If you can pull the images up in another browser window, then you have images that can be seen, these are broken or something.

I know. I just inserted the stars in the thread to show what I did. I uploaded the pictures and they do not look broken when I see them. I did not include the stars when I first tried to post and it did not work. I thought someone could tell me what I did wrong. I can never get that right!

Most of the Louis Vuitton purses and wallets I have seen at thrift stores and yard sales have been fakes. Out of hundreds of Louis Vuitton purses I have inspected, only 2 have been genuine.

I find quite a few Gucci, Coach, and Dooney & Bourkes--most come from my friends who love spending $500 on a new purse every year. I can usually spot a fake from a distance.

The dead giveaway is none of the purses above will have a Made in China tag.

Thanks for posting my picture!!!!! I do know that a Made in China tag is a dead giveaway but Both of the LV purses I have had have been leather. If you can spot from a distance a fake...do you mind telling me if mine is? Mine does not have a made in china tag. I will try to post the other pics......

All I know is, if it's real, find someone to sell it in Japan. LV is especially popular in Japan, especially with the younger crowds.

I gotta say it certainly looks real. If it's fake, it's one of the better ones. I own a resale shop and I've seen a ton of the fake ones.
