I would like to know how some of you sellers ship expensive vintage breakables through the USPS insured and feel that you could recover your money should anything happen to it?
I need to ship a $450.00 beakable but really hesitate to use USPS because of there insurance policy.
I was talking to the postmaster here and he says if its breakable - tough. I would have to find a like item of same value and prove it to them, and if I couldn't find one for $450., but could only find one for $300. thats all I would receive, $300.00. Well for crying out loud, I figure if the buyer paid that much then its worth that much.
And...who should be responsible for finding the value? The Seller or the Buyer?
I have triple boxed this widget and I still hesitate to purchase their insurance for $5.00, it gives me no piece of mind.
Does anyone know what UPS policy is for expensive vintage beakables?

The best value for your money with USPS insurance is when insuring up to $50 only. A claim up to this amount is supposed to be quick to process and they can pay it out of the till, so I've heard.
The over $50 claims are a real nightmare (I had one once) and can take 2 months or more to work out, plus you have the burden of proving what the item was worth. I don't know if a printout of the auction page would be enough. You know, there's no way they are going to make it an easy and pleasant experience. After all, they are happy to sell you the insurance, but you just know they don't want to pay. It grinds me.
Same deal with UPS. I once had a discussion with a UPS employee who told me that she doubted UPS would pay a damage claim on a package I was shipping. I asked her, why are you willing to sell me the insurance then? What a crock. They make tons of dough on selling insurance then fight you tooth-and-nail.
I recommend U-pic as well.
