WOW I would be steamed too mostly at myself for setting a policy like that , makeing it hard to sell my Items to all who want to buy them.
Not accepting personal checks kind of limits your sales not all people have credit cards or endless credit card limits some times they reach there limit and must pay down some before they can use again.
Some people dont have easy unlimited access to a store or post office to get a money order as lots of people dont live in city large towns or drive most do have a checking account how ever and can write checks from home and mail from there mail box out in front of there house.
Guess What lots of dot coms fail go broke or do porrly because the only way they have set up to pay is credit card and many of the people who look and would like to buy the things they sell dont have a credit card or wont use it online.
and low sales and losses on sales they do have are the Number one reason for dot com failure.
Many many people have the Cash to buy the reason they have the cash is they dont have all the debt and credit of others.
There are two large markets in this coutry Right now with $$$ to spend.
One is underage and arent allowed credit yet from 10 to 17 years old.
the other is baby boomers they are at or nearing retirement age they are paying off there debts trying to lower there barrowing or doing way with it all togeather.
Many sells say I dont accept paypal some say they wont accept checks some wont accept either and ask how hard is it to just go get a money order.
Some who have credit card there only way to send a money order would be bidpay which charges $5 for the money order mailed to the buyer steep price to pay.
Ask your self this how hard would it be for a seller to trust in people untill they do you wrong.

I've never had a paypal limit, so I am not sure how long that would take?
dman: You make good points, I've just had some bad experiences with bad checks and the item already being shipped out. How do you make absultely sure that the check has cleared your bank?
I will probably make an exception in this case - my no check policy is mainly enforced by my husband, who (and I quote) "Absolutely refuses to get burned anymore"
How many experiences have any of you had with bad checks, or what policies do you have in place for them?

You Could have recommended they send you a E check through billpoint or paypal you would bed notifide when the check clears.
another way to know if the person has the funds for the check to clear before depositing is to wait for the check and call there bank giveing there name and account number then bank will let you know if the funds are in the account this way there is no chance bad check fees on you since you wouldnt even deposit a bad check.
or you could deposit the check in your bank and call your back in about 10 days they should know if it cleared.
I dont want my reply to look like im pointing and picking on what you feel is safe and good for you But there are many factor here a bad deal with one person dont make all guilty on one hand dam if you do on the other damed if you dont.
RIght now even if the buyer pays you with there check Its a garenteed sale odds are good the check wont bounce.
There is always that one in a million though.

This person can't do PayPal since they are at their limit. The can't do BillPoint because of some problem with WebTV and BillPoint.
The banks will actually let you call them and inquire if the person has enough to cover it?? I wouldn't have thought that was possible given all the privacy restrictions etc - without them seeing the actual check that is.

I have had 3 or 4 bad checks and they were all reimbursed.
In my auctions, I have "Payments with check may be delayed in shipping for check clearance"
This lets me decide on each check, verses the amount, check number, their feedback etc.
A bounced check can take up to three weeks to get returned to you in the mail. True, it will be deposited in your account quickly, but by the time it returns to the originating bank and is returned to you for NSF can take 3 weeks, all of mine did.

AntiqueParrot: I do not accept Personal checks either (after having SEVERAL bounced checks my first year on ebay).
I offer my customers several other online payment methods. If they want to pay by check, the only way I will accept that is by Billpoint E-check, or Achex. If you haven't looked into Achex, you really should. There are no fees to the seller, and they tell you when the check has cleared so you can ship.

Antique Parrot - take all of your previously bounced checks, go to the website
http://www.madagency.com/
and use the online form to file them with this collection agency. They do good work!

They are not supposed to be bidding on ebay items.
AntiqueParrot:
If you don't feel comfortable taking checks, then don't. Your TOS are stated upfront. If the bidder.
As Dman says: Some people dont have easy unlimited access to a store or post office to get a money order as lots of people dont live in city large towns or drive most do have a checking account how ever and can write checks from home and mail from there mail box out in front of there house.
That is true. However you are not obliged to cater to them. They can abide by your terms or bid on another auction. You are not making it hard to sell your items to people that want to buy them. If someone really wants to buy an item they will pay you how you want it.

I've had four bad checks in three years and all were made good by a money order or cash in a short period of time. Below is the email I send once I receive the bad check from my bank.
I feel that if you don't take personal checks you are missing out on many sales. Just my opinion of course.
Hi xxxxxx,
The check I received from you (#2523 dated 5/15/01) for this auction was returned for non sufficient funds (NSF).
I will hold this check for seven (7) days to allow you time to send a money order for the amount of the check which is $20.95 plus The $3.00 processing fee I had to pay my bank. The total you owe is $23.95.
After one week if I haven't received the payment I will turn the check over to the appropriate authorities for processing.
Please respond to this email ASAP and remit the amount due within seven (7) days.
After payment is received I will return your check.
Send payment to:

I would tell them they have 10 days to pay by money order or PayPal. If they don't pay file NPB and FVF.
All of these people giving you free advise about taking personel checks just haven't been burnt YET. I accepted checks for 2 years without a problem then I got burnt for $400.00 by a bidder with 100+ feedback. That check was returned NSF 28 days after I deposited it.

I accept personal checks if the bidder sends payment on time.
For auctions over 2 weeks old, I insist on money order. The only 2 bounced checks came from late bidders. Those who pay on time generally don't bounce checks.

I have had one bad check in over 30 years. Before ebay I did the Arts and Craft fairs and also flea markets and I took any form of payment which was offered. My first returned check was from a ebayer and she had the courtesy to tell me before it happened. Of course that didn't help the late fee but they then sent a money order and she got her widget. I don't hold checks but remember if you do hold them at least 3 weeks. If they want the item faster then they have to send a money order.

Has anyone tried Achex? Direct transfer from their checking account to yours. As I recall, fees are minimal.
