Got another of those emails that look like I sent it to my self, this one foe a "Free Magnetic Therapy Bracelet.", Complete with an eBay Great Collection banner.

Folks, eBay is "sponsering" anything and everything, and are going to start spaming the crap out of us. The emails are written so as you can't even send a return and tell them to "go to he**", if you try, it comes back to you.

Looking at the source code, it looks like this one came from www.paid4survey.net, just like the cellular pager one came from.

Below is part of the source code, the XXXXed out email address is mine, but notice all the "hidden" items in the code. Why hide anything if it isn't SPAM, pure and simple.

I've been getting them to. If you will look at all the source code, you will find that there are web tracking bugs also. This from our beloved privacy minded eBay.

Hello Microbes It kind of makes you wonder where they're getting your email address from, doesn't it?

Those emails have a web bug embedded in the HTML message so you should clean out your Temp Internet files right away. Also, you can go here http://www.paid4survey.net/ and OPT OUT (don't you love it) from receiving any more of their garbage Spam by checking off the box located at the bottom of the page. I don't know if it'll work but it's worth a try.

I sure hope you didn't fill out any of their surveys because, if you did, you'll probably never get off their Spam list.

BTW, these emails are a direct result of the eBay and Microsoft alliance and can be traced back to ClickTrade which is part of Microsoft's bCentral Network Hub and eBay is one of their affiliates. Go here http://www.clicktrade.com/ and click on REVENUE AVENUE to see a nice BIG eBay logo.

If you go to this page http://www.paid4survey.net/policy.htm they will tell you that your email isn't Spam because you have an existing relationship with the company that sent it. Who do you have an existing relationship with?

QUOTE
How do we avoid "spam"?

We encourage companies to use the system for communicating to individuals with whom they already have a relationship. When using additional sources of information, companies may only send email to individuals who have expressly shared their address for the purpose of receiving offers and information in the future (Often called opt-in lists).
END QUOTE

What a crock!!!

Also, the page I just mentioned has an [email protected] where you can forward a copy of the Spam.

And folks wonder why I won't give my banking info to eBay or BillPoint. DUH

Blanche, I think I know where they got my email address from

I didn't (and would never) fill out a form on an email from someone that cold mailed me. I don't respond to junk mail that shows up in the metal box out by the road either.

Only real reason I looked at the source code at all is that my email address shows up in the from field, and I'm trying to figure out 2 things.

1. How they do that. (I think I have that figured out, but why was the code language written to allow it????)

2. Why they would do that. It is most annoying, and for someone who is obviously wanting to sell you on something, why do it in an annoying way. Normal spam, I just delete, but annoying spam, I look at hard.

It is surprising how much of what looks to be "scam emails" is coming from servers in eastern europian countries, when I know good and well, the authors are in the USA. (these, I don't think have anything to do with ebay, other than maybe our email address was "harvested" from ebay, and since my user id is my email, I expect a certain amount of this.)

Funny you should mention this, but I almost succumbed to the magnet bracelet, being a tad stiff in the joints of late!
Anyway , all was going well until I saw that they wanted my zip code and annual income.
Well, why not my panty hose size and my shoe width?
My laundry soap and my trash can contents?

How about my laundry..? ..would I leave it out with the trash , pretty please, preferably in a ziplock bag..? (seeing as how they must already know the day of my trash pick-up, having my zip code an' all...)

Nosy buggers.

I'm off to clear my temp. internet files.

MouseSlayer,

They want you to go to that page. The web tracking bug is now activated. They can now track your internet movements until you get rid of it. Bad $hit!

Go here to get a free program to get rid of it:

I would copy it and forward it to spam@ ebay.com
If they get enough they may stop or at least let them deal with it.
Funny though I have yet to get any of these or maybe I have and just deleted it with other spam

bhearsch,

Having gotten a spam as described, I tried following your link to do the deletion order but found it asked me if I was somebody (code letters) at a mindspring email. Is that your email? If so, you might want to edit your post there so folks don't see it too much.

Looks like you have to go to that spam-item web page on your own steam, trailing ID tracking code, for them to offer to take you OFF their list.

Hi everyone. I'm bringing this back up again because I've been gone all day and just now saw these last comments.

pythOOn, that mindspring addy isn't my email address and I don't have any idea what it's doing there. I didn't click on the link before because I never received this particular Spam email. Obviously, they aren't going to remove you from their list using that link since the email mentioned doesn't belong to anyone.

You could try to forward a copy to [email protected] along with your comments. The abuse addy is mentioned at the bottom of this page: http://www.paid4survey.net/policy.htm You could also have Spam Cop send in the complaints.

BTW, I use WebWasher which is a filtering browser and it doesn't allow any web bugs or cookies to be placed on my machine unless I put them into an "ignore" folder. It also replaces my browser info with anything I wish to put into that field and it removes the referrer so no one knows where I've been. It's a great privacy and security proggie which helps to make me invisible when I'm surfing the net. I LOVE to be invisible.

Hi Microbes,

Interesting thread.

I've received an email or two like this. I saw the huge eBay banner across the bottom and also believed it was eBay affiliated somehow. One of the emails was for a really small headset radio. I clicked through the survey to the web site and clicked on the PayPal Instant Logo. I couldn't change my source of funds. It stated they did not accept CC. It didn't smell right so I put away my Visa Debit Card and backed right out of there.

I even posted a thread here asking how to not accept CC from PayPal. PayPalDamon said it was strickly a premier or business account feature. I'd never seen that feature before. I'm still an upgrade rebel.

I can tell you how they're making it look like it came from you.

There are special software programs designed to forge headers. Most spammers use these.

The more advanced of these allow you to do all sorts of things like alter the ip address.

A lot of the more advanced spammers can even write their own software to do what they want.

I sent an email to [email protected] concerning the spam. Below is my email, below that is eBay's reply, and below that is my response to their reply. I haven't received a reply from eBay to my last email.

Most everyone here knows of their affiliation with Clicktrade and Microsoft. It appears that Clicktrade is devious enough to use a free email service (ynnmail.com) to send their spam through.

I have received the spam below from www.paid4survey.net on eBay's behalf. It also contains a web tracking bug. If you will read through the message you will find the following:

om/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?RedirectEnter&partner=21536&loc=http://www.ebayg
reatcollections.com?'&ad=178139.0&lp=425198>

//www.ebaygreatcollections.com?'&ad=3D178139.0&lp=3D425198"><img =
src=3D"http://revenue.bCentral.com/images/eBay/GC_468x60_gen_1.gif" =
border=3D0></a>

I do not appreciate receiving these promotions. My eBay preferences are set to not receive them either directly or indirectly. This is not the first time that this has been done and I have complained before.

I will not go to their site to opt out and activate their web bug. eBay has an association with this company and is responsible for providing them with my email address. So, it is eBay's responsibility to remove me from that list.

I expect to never receive another *spam* email promotion from www.paid4survey.net or any other eBay partner or hired spammer.

Your promptness in acting on my request will be appreciated.

=============================================

Hello,

This sender is using a free email service. This email service is able to allow free email by attaching advertisements for various companies to every email that is sent using their service. These advertisements help
pay for the cost of running an email service.

Unfortunately our company, eBay, happens to be used in some of the advertisements that have been attached to messages sent through this email service. We do not in any way endorse this message that was sent and are currently investigating the matter further.

You may want to send a report of the SPAM to the ISP of the sender. SPAM is usually considered as an abuse of the terms of ISP's. Often a report
sent to the ISP will resolve this kind of problem. To do this, look at the senders email address and substitute the word abuse in place of the name in front of the @ symbol. For example, if the SPAM were sent from [email protected], you would send your report to [email protected].

If you decide to report this to the ISP, please forward them the entire email, including full headers, along with a short note indicating the email was unsolicited.

Additional resources you can use to fight SPAM may be found at www.spamcop.net and www.mail-abuse.org. They can assist us in our
efforts if they receive complaints as well.

Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.

=============================================

Thanks for your prompt response. This link: http://www.clicktrade.com/ is to a page that when the home button is clicked, takes one to
http://www.bcentral.com/, which is a Microsoft site. It is a well published fact that eBay and Microsoft have recently formed an alliance. Also, the link: http://revenue.bCentral.com/ is a Microsoft
site.

Can you say with absolute certainty that eBay in no way is involved with and has no relationship with clicktrade or Microsoft in this spam endeavor?

Hey noshill, I can't wait to hear eBay's next answer. LOL

I'm certain these emails are related to bCentral's affiliates and eBay happens to be one of them. The problem with most of the large Dot Coms is they SHARE their user's info with all of their partners and affiliates. EBay may not have initiated this particular Spam email BUT eBay is still responsible because they have shared our info with Microsoft (bCentral) and all of their affiliates and partners.

It won't be long before the entire online world has our personal info all because we signed up with eBay 4 years ago before they had any partners. The really bad part is you can't get them to remove your info. You can remove your registration status all you want to but your info is going to remain in eBay's database FOREVER because they feel it belongs to them. I would not have signed up with eBay today in light of their present Privacy Policy and their partners/affiliates but there's absolutely nothing you can do to reverse the process once they have you in their database.

This is just to rich. These emails have the receivers email in the from box. I guess they want us to send our complaints to:

Yeah, right.

I know that reporting Spam to Spam Cop or such is gratifying, but I have found that the best way to handle Spam is to use the delete button. We get between 35 and 75 pieces of Spam every day. I use Outlook express and can see without opening what the e-mail is, and just go though quickly and delete all Spam.

I went through reporting such to no avail, and researching their origin, all of this takes too much time, which I don’t want to spare to combat Spam, delete works just fine – I do put in a BLOCK on repeat spammers.

I don’t clear my regular “Temporary Internet Files” too often as it also clears all cookies which then requires me to put in ID’s and Passwords.

Guess there is no simple solution to Spam – just like the mail, just junk it with delete.

Hello. Does anyone still have this email? If so, could you post the full message source by highlighting the email, right clicking PROPERTIES and then choose DETAILS and MESSAGE SOURCE? I haven't received it and I'd like to view the full headers if possible. You can edit out your email address and any other personal information. I have to leave for the day but will check back this evening. Thanks

How Does Magnetic Therapy Work?

Ions in the blood carry either a positive or negative charge. As they
pass through a magnetic field they are either attracted or repelled
which causes them to accelerate. The ions push against the vessel walls
dilating, or opening them, allowing increased blood flow. Heat is
generated by this increase in motion and enhances circulation. Oxidation
is a by-product of ion collisions which carries toxins away from the
damaged area so that it may be filtered. Energized and oxygenated blood
cells help heal the damaged tissue.

This Beautiful 24K Gold plated Magnetic Bracelet will be yours Free! You are invited to participate in our beta market trial for the effectiveness of Magnetic Therapy. We'll ask you by email a couple of simple questions after you have used this Magnetic Bracelet for about a month. Feel The Benefit Of Magnetic Therapy!

This attractive Shiny and 24K gold plated bracelet is embedded with powerful 1,800 + gauss magnets. Many studies have shown that magnets may be an effective, non-invasive, drug-free way to help reduce pain, to help increase flexibility and promote the body's own natural healing process. This newly designed bracelet feature deep penetrating uni-pole magnets. This type of magnet is believed to provide the superior results
compared to the bi-polar magnets often used in other brands.
Magnetic therapy is a natural, non-invasive way to relieve the discomfort associated with the rigors of daily life. Bracelets are popular among professional athletes as therapy for aches and stiffness.
Lightweight designed to be worn by both men and women.
This bracelet is 7 1/2" long and it comes in a beautiful Velvet Pouch for you to store when not in use

How Does Magnetic Therapy Work?

Ions in the blood carry either a positive or negative charge. As they pass through a magnetic field they are either attracted or repelled which causes them to accelerate. The ions push against the vessel walls dilating, or opening them, allowing increased blood flow. Heat is generated by this increase in motion and enhances circulation. Oxidation
is a by-product of ion collisions which carries toxins away from the damaged area so that it may be filtered. Energized and oxygenated blood cells help heal the damaged tissue.

I received a reply to my last email to eBay. Judge for yourself if you believe that they had nothing to do with the spam.

Hello xxx,

Thank you for writing eBay for clarification regarding the email that you received. I am glad to be able to assist you with this matter.

Please let me assure you that eBay is in no way connected to the email that you received. eBay did not sent this email. We also do not endorse this type of activity in any way.

spam is usually considered as an abuse of the terms of ISP's. So, unless an email was sent through eBay's forwarding system, you may want to report unwanted email to the ISP of the sender, which may help resolve this type of problem. To do this, substitute the word "abuse" in place of the name in front of the @ symbol. For example, if the spam was sent from [email protected], you would send your report to [email protected].

When you report spam that you receive, be sure to include a complete copy of the spam email, including the full header. Headers are important because they contain evidence of the path of the email.

We appreciate you helping to keep eBay a safe and fun place to trade.

It was a pleasure to assist you today!

I guess they are trying to say that paid4survey.net put their (eBay's)banner in it out of the goodness of their hearts???

LMAO

Microbes,

That's what I thought. Now, let me get this straight. paid4survey.net and Clicktrade are going to spend their time and resources to prompte eBay for nothing. Me thinks that untruths are fortcoming from eBay.

I wish I knew how to get one of these services to promote my auctions for free.

Have you noticed that eBay is using more and more of the very same methods to contact users that they have restricted the sellers from using?

I'm getting close to having my own products ready for market. That will mean that the fees that I know pay eBay will go into advertising my web site. Probably will use eBay very little, if at all.

Another powerseller leaving.

Thanks Microbes and noshill. My God, that thing is almost 14KB. It's bad enough that we have to deal with this kind of garbage but it's even worse when the Spam email is this LARGE. It's just a total waste of bandwidth and I know some folks have email accounts with a size limit.

I'm going to play around with this for a while.

BTW, how'd you like the spelling in noshill's last email from eBay?

eBay did not sent this email
END QUOTE

eBay (no capital at beginning of sentence?) did not SENT this email? It sounds like the author was a bit flustered to me.

It's very unfortunate that eBay has now become a Direct Marketer in their race to make money for the stockholders. I don't trust Direct Marketers and that's really putting it too kindly!!
