I am new to the digital world.
So what you are saying--with my olympus D-460, I can buy a device that reads the 8MB card (the smart mouse) and I don't ever even need that serial port/cable. Thanks a lot. Are these on ebay too?

Yes, that is what I'm saying. I have not even had my cord out of the box. I much prefer the card reader. I have no idea if they are on Ebay..I just waited til Buy.com had a free shipping weekend and bought it there for about $26. My model number was San Disk SDDR09. Once you install it on your computer, it works just like another harddrive..much like a zip drive would. When I go need to use my laptop, (I have the driver installed on it as well), I just unplug it from my desk computer, and plug it into my laptop. Since it's USB, it's hot swappable (which means I don't have to turn off the computer when plugging it in).I'm assuming you have a USB plug on your computer.
These are much faster than the serial port hook up.
By the way, you'll love that camera..once you get it figured out! Olympus' 1 800 number is very helpful also for any questions.(1 800 622-6372)
