"......these are very well made, that's why shipping is so high"
WHAT????? Now I have to pay higher shipping because the item is well made?? What's up with that? Does that mean it is cheaper to package and ship because it is a cheaper product? You mean I have been under charging for my higher priced items? Am I a dork or what? I thought the boxes, packing materials, and all the other goodies cost the same, no matter how well the item is "made"! What say ye fellow board members?

When you ask a question you shouldn't (why is your shipping so high?), then you just might get a snippy, sarcastic answer. Sounds like that is what you got.
posted on June 18, 2001 09:16:45 PMWhen you ask a question you shouldn't...
This is a first! How many times on these threads have we read "you have to ASK questions before you bid!!!"... and now a buyer is being told they shouldn't have asked a question??? I can't believe what I'm reading!
Maybe the shipping wasn't stated in the auction! And maybe when they were told the shipping amount, the buyer politely asked "can I ask why shipping is so high on this item?"
Amy - are you saying that if you receive an email you "don't like" you think it's ok to respond in a "snippy" fashion?
I say the buyer had EVERY RIGHT to simply inquire if they thought the shipping was excessive.

Why EG...you really DO read what I write even though you claim you don't...I think I feel honored
EG, the question "Why are your shipping charges so high" is very, very different from "The shipping charge isn't listed in your auction and I was wondering if you could tell me how much to ship this item to Azusa, Ca".
The second question should always be asked of a seller who does not list the shipping charges in the auction BEFORE the buyer places a bid. The first questiion shouldn't be asked as it is irrevelant...if the buyer feels the shipping is to high he should just not bid...it doesn't matter WHY the shipping is the amount it is.
are you saying that if you receive an email you "don't like" you think it's ok to respond in a "snippy" fashion?
No, a careful reading would show that I was commenting on the fact that it is not an unreasonable expectation to receive a snippy, sarcastic response to a question the recipient felt was intrusive and none of the questioners business. I did not say I condoned such behavior.
The response I was describing would be similar to your response to my post.

Regardless, if the shipping amount was or was not listed in the auction, the buyer still had every right to inquire about WHY the shipping cost was so high.
And yes, if he bid, he was agreeing to it, and that is that. BUT, he has every right to know why shipping is so high if he felt the shipping amount was excessive.
There are some sellers who may try to accomodate the buyer and try to ship a cheaper method to lower the costs. The seller does not HAVE to do this, but if he knew the buyer thought shipping was excessive, maybe he would have tried to lower it for the buyer.
I do not see anything wrong with asking why shipping was so high. ESPECIALLY if they did it in a polite manner.
The response I was describing would be similar to your response to my post.
Well, you get what you dish out I guess!

Boy, do people here jump to conclusions or what? For everyones information:
The seller stated shipping in the TOS. I did not email her to ask why, it was stated in the TOS also. I was only commenting here, about why she said it was so high. I can understand shipping being high due to location, handling fees, packaging method, etc. I cannot understand charging double just because the item is well made. Whatever. I DIDNT bid. And, as a paying customer, I and everyone else that buys deserves to be treated decently. Sarcastic remarks are not needed. I would NEVER send my customer a snippy remark! And yes, I sell on EBAY, have been for over a year, and ALL my customers are happy with my service. If I got treated crappy at the local mall do you think I would ever do business with that store again? NOT. BTW I think I will be a lurker from now on rather than a poster.....seems some people are all too happy to jump down others throats for nothing! Have a great day.
posted on June 19, 2001 05:19:02 AMYuma: I wouldn't worry too much about what the people on here say. Don't stop posting because of this thread.
Just to throw my two cents in: if I don't like the shipping charges I don't bid simple as that. No big debate about it. I don't ask questions to the seller as to why it is so high, don't care to know. I can usually find another auction with better shipping prices. That is what eBay is about for buyers, finding great stuff at great prices.

yumacoot, I hear you!!!! I asked a question, and there were about 5 editorial comments about the background story before the question was even answered. As a result, I too, will be a lurker
BTW, I had to laugh when I read the comment. My train of thought went the same way yours did. Not knowing what it was at the time, and knowing that I usually buy clothing....designer labels weigh more????

I think there is another equation you are over looking:
Well Made = heavier heavier = higher shipping costs
That sounds like a reasonable possibility. Although packing material costs may have nothing to do with the quality of the item, the weight certainly will affect the cost of shipping.

Seems a little unfair to complain about others jumping to conclusions when it was your assumption which brought the issue up, doesn't it?

The items were not any better made than any other, therefore could not have been any heavier. They were little tikes chunky people for gods sake! All the ones made are made by Little Tikes, they are all the same!!! Shipping for $2.00 versus shipping for $7.00. I will bid on the $2.00 shipping auction. Like I said before, I was only making a comment, thinking I might strike up a NICE conversation with some of you. Forget I ever posted this okay?

Yumacoot...one way to get responses that relate accurately to your scenario is to give a full, accurate summation of the situation from the get-go. Leaving out pertinent facts needed by the reader to form a full opinion of the situation will only result in responses that are not germane.
You should have stated this statement was in the TOS, plus you should have given us the type of merchandise involved and you should have stated that you didn't ask the seller any questions.
Sorry you didn't get the "nice conversation" you were looking for. Maybe next time you can give the "full story". Of course it would also help you get the "nice conversation" moving in the direction you want if you were also to give ground rules as to the type of responses you wanted. That way if what you wanted was a "slam the seller in question" thread a la the infamous "small wrist" genre, you could have gotten it.
It is possible the seller could have been reusing an auction template from another auction and the shipping amount and explanation of why it high was accidently left in from a previous item description.
There are many things that, if well made, will be heavier than cheaper versions of the same item and therefore will be more costly to ship than the cheaper version would be.
EG
Well, you get what you dish out I guess!
I bow to your expertise on this as I do believe you have much experience in getting back what you have dished out!

No, Amy, I will not be starting any more posts in the future, I will simply lurk, or, join in conversations that already exist. Then there shouldn't be any misunderstandings caused by me. I guess I just didn't think far enough ahead to make an "intelligent" post, as judged by others in this thread. Sorry for any hate and discontent I stirred up. In the future, I will be more guarded in what I DO say, IF I say anything. I left these boards over a year ago, and now that I have came back, I know why I left in the first place.

Yumacoot: I do not know if you understood my post correctly, but I was on your side, and felt you had every right to ask why shipping was so high, for whatever reason.
I have to disagree with Amy, though - the ones who want "the whole story" with details that are not needed, are the ones who I've noticed in other threads, will contact the other party and start trouble here on the boards. Some people just thrive on that!
Yumacoot had already told us what type of merchandise it was - "dolls for a dollhouse, very lightweight".... so to elaborate more and to be very specific as to what item it was, is just asking for trouble, IMO.
Next thing you know, the seller would be invited here (anonymously, of course, because the person who invited them is afraid to let us all know who they are) and, well, I'm sure you've seen it on other threads.
The least amount of info you can give, the better!
