I was wondering if anyone else was getting pop up adds. I got a pop add for Half.com and I don't know if it was from here or Ebay. I don't use sites that use pop-up adds because I DETEST them. I reloaded but nothing came up maybe it was just a fluke . . . ?

I got it too, BUT I wasn't in ebay, I was only in auctionwatch, so AW is the one responsible for this pop-up.

It looks like since people are not clicking on the ads they are hoping you will at least see them this way. I wonder if they realize that people close them before they finish downloading?
I can't stand pop-ups.
If people are using AuctionTamer version 5.0.7 or later there is now an option to disallow popups in the Browsers menu.

I stand corrected. It is AW and not ebay doing this crud!
(I expect ebay will catch on quickly though)

It shows up EVERY time I go back to the AW message center!
>Pretty damn annoying.<
VERY damn annoying!
Things like that just help me to re-affirm that I WILL NOT EVER buy anything at 1/2 dot com!
Advertising is one thing, annoying me is another.
Of course, that's just me.

Started for me today, too.
I HATE POP UP ADS! I don't care what they're for-I close them before they even get a chance to open.

This is why I came here to post...to see if anyone else was getting it. I hate popups!!
And, AW this is really a stupid place to advertise for Half. com. As if we didn't know it excisted. A lot of people here sell on Half.com for gooodness sakes.
Give us a break, and get real!

Talk about ATTITUDE:
"Ad's on our site are something we have always had and will continue to have. If either of you object to this policy, please send an email to [email protected] and we will be happy to cancel your accounts. "
Per Barkers post. Makes me glad I don't hassle with a store here, heck, why bother??

You are right I came in tonight to try 2cit pay program or whaterver they call it and I go that blasted add again.
I haven't scheduled auctions here since they started charging fees but I was going to give it a try tonight because I am away a lot in the summer. Not having to be home would be a big help. I have to be here for auction submit it is free which is nice but I still have to be here with this auction software. I guess I will either schedule them on goto or whatever they are calling it now or get a laptop to take with when I am away on the weekends for the summer.
To bad I like Aw the most but I hate popup ads. There is a reason tripod is getting ride of them and many other sites. I was reading one of my marketing journels and they were talking about these ads. They said that most of the web sites lose more business by popup then they gain and that also lose goodwill of their vistors. I am not sure if they are correct but I know a lot of people that won't use sites that have pop up ads. They as I find it down right rude. Have your ads but don't throw them in my face if you want me to visit your site.
I guess I can go directly to this cit2 pay program instead of going through here.
I will stay away a few weeks and see if the pop-ups are gone and if our voices matter.
That message from the staff placed here does have a lot of attitude in it about canceling the accounts. That is really rude. Kind of like giving us the finger. I guess AW is starting to get the Ebay attidue. I for one not that it matters was very offended by that. Let it also be known that I DO click on the ads and do buy from the ads here to help support AW and have also told others to do that but pop up in you face is just down right rude! and then the attitude to go with it.
Anyway you all have a nice summer and happy selling and watch out for those pop up ads. If they get ride of them send me an e-mail at [email protected] I like the boards here but not at the risk of those blast !#$&&$ ads. Happy Surfing!!

Thank goodness I don't have an account with AuctionWatch! I don't use any of their services and never will (I don't believe in relying on third party services -- I have my own webspace and write my own templates).
I have NEVER clicked on a pop-up ad. Matter of principle. It gets deleted immediately. Having to be subject to it because of AW's "policy" is hogwash.

These "Pop-Unders" are the latest and greatest fad in dotcom advertising and spreading like wildfire. My prediction: Be patient, for it too shall pass.
If you don't like the popups, just go to your preferences and disable javascript. That is a less severe answer than disconnecting your AW account.
Keep in mind, disabling javascript will also cause a lot of other interesting web doodads to stopworking, but you gotta take the bad with the good....

Pop-unders are a sneaky way to shove ads at people without taking the blame for it. Since users often aren't aware of the ad until after they leave the site that served it, they end up blaming an innocent web site, as we've seen here.
But wait till you see the new generation of online advertising technology. They've got pop-unders on timers, so the ads appear unexpectedly throughout your session -- even after you've gone on to other web sites. And exit consoles (multiple pop-ups that appear when you leave a site) have gone mainstream; they're not just for porn sites any more. One of the more obnoxious techniques is to have an ad splash across the entire screen when a user inadvertantly drags her mouse across a hidden hot spot.
Big Advertising is bragging that the new ad technologies can sail right through ad filters because they're part of the web page, and there's no way to kill them. What's more disturbing is that the ad companies are producing studies they claim show these techniques are not only effective but also that people actually like them.
The New York Times is "experimenting" with ad animations that walk around the page as users read the text. They claim users love it so much they visit the web site just to see the ads. I don't know whether that's true or not. But they forgot to ask me about it, and I cancelled my subscription this morning.

For your 'average' sites there is no reason whatever for Javascript, so it should be disabled. For other sites that you use, and where they actually perfrom useful functions, then put them in your 'Trusted' Internet Security Zone in IE. Have JS enabled there.
You can also use some of the newer third party browsers, like the one that I have that is set to kill ads and tracking cookies.
I rarely if ever see banner ads, I dont see pop-ups, and I have yet to see a pop-under.
Trust me, if the ad companies can make it, we can filter it out.

Hey guys,
Here is a link for a good popup ad killer program
http://wwwwin.wplus.net/pp/fsc/killad.zip
Basically, it kills any new web browser trying to open.
Problem is, if you want another browser open, you have to put it in watch mode, open your other browser, then put it back in 'terminator' mode.
It is very effective, and I haven't seen those STUPID ads recently!
Makes my surfing more enjoyable, that's for sure.

I keep Javascript off 98% of the time, Java off 99% of the time, and ActiveX off 100% of the time, and don't feel I'm missing anything meaningful or even that fun.
I actually click on some ads, but only the banners or plain text ones (yes, some do exist), usually ones that don't blink (I hate animated gizmos when I'm trying to read text), almost always the ones relevant to the topic at hand (e.g. ads related to airplanes when I'm at a plane site), and definitely not pop-ups. (I haven't seen a pop-under yet, but from descriptions here and elsewhere, that strikes me as less immediately annoying but more devious and just as troublesome. )
Oh, IE, at least as of 5.0x, if not before, has an option to disable animation, so that only the first frame of animation appears (and then stays still at that). I'm not on the computer with IE, but I think it is under Tools | Options | [Advanced] | :Multimedia.
Sorry AW and others. I hate to be a freeloader, but I don't appreciate being annoyed by over-stepping forms of marketing, and this type, I can easily block. Marketing has its place, but should stay there.
----
What's being done in the name of direct marketing nowadays is crazy.
The above are all just my opinions, except where I cite facts as such.
Oh, I am not dc9a320 anywhere except AW. Any others are not me.
Is eBay is changing from a world bazaar into a bizarre world?

I think this thread explains a mystery if this just started a couple days ago. I have adsubtract and I don't get the ad -- but every time I come here lately there is a little burping noise out of my speakers that cuts off. Is there any sound associated with this ad? No it is not an echo of me....

Annoying, annoying, annoying!
Can someone please explain to me how to disable Active X and how it affects me (if it does?) In fact, what IS Active X and WHY is it even on my computer?
Please use terms appropriate for a techno-tard!
Thanks!

If we're taking a vote here, I won't go anywhere advertised by pop-ups, so bye- bye half.com! I have Java for some games but the delete button works very good.
