I bought something and it's over a week later and the seller just contacted me and says, "your item has just been shipped". Meaning to me, he didn't HAVE this item but had to order it himself. Can you DO this?? Is this legal?
Just sign me: haven't been a snitch...YET.

Just because the seller didn't ship your item until a week later, does not mean they did not have the item on hand.
Maybe they had a family emergency and couldn't ship until now?
Maybe they were sick?
Maybe they were just behind in shipping out their items?
Did you contact them to ask them why it took a week to ship?
And, yes, you can sell things you do not have on hand - but that should be stated in the auction that the item is not on hand and needs to be ordered first.

I often email people and just say the same thing, worded the same way. I am shipping from here, and I only list things that are in my posession.

sorry I wasn't clear on that. It's a BIG business, not an individual. selling hundreds of items at a time. I don't think someone in the family being sick qualifies.

Some of the highest quality items I've found on eBay are the one's clearly being dropshipped. You get professional packaging with those as well.

some sellers have retail shops and carrier comes once a week to pick up the packages.
or they live somewhere not close to post office or carrier drop off service.
or they sold the item in their store and have to reorder,or sold on multiple e commerce sites, etc ect
ftc said mail order should be shipped within 30 days after payment,so one week is okay.

Alot of Sellers use the Drop Ship method which E-Bay allows. The only down side is you don't have any control over IF they will ship the merchandise or WHEN. So you can rack yourself up a pile of Neg's in a hurry. It makes a impressive looking auction to say you have a 100 or so of an item, but I would rather just half a few of something and know I have it when I run my auctions. The good thing about drop shipped items is you don't have to pay out big money on inventory and have to worry about having a place to store it.
