I received a personal check for an eBay item somebody won, but instead of the check being made out to me it was made out to 'cash.'
With the close to 300 personal checks I've received, this is the first time I have seen this! I emailed the sender and they replied that many sellers prefer receiving checks made out to cash and I should just deposit it and everything will be fine!
Has this been anyone else's experience? Or am I just being too careful?
Thanks all for your advice!

Well the only time a check (I thought!) could be written to CASH is if its your own check, to your own bank.
Unless your bank knows you well, I don't have a clue as to whether they would take it.
Never heard of someone writing a check to someone else in the name of CASH.
You wouldn't write a check at Walmart and put in the Pay to the Order of: Cash
Course who knows, it might be ok, I've never had anything like that happen before.

checks made out to cash are legit. It is possible they just didn't know who you wanted it made out to.

"cash" is legit. It simply makes the check a bearer instrument.
But that's legal talk. all you have to do is take it to your bank and cash it.

I wonder if they just didn't want their spouse going throught the checkbook register and seeing how much they were spending on trifles? This is the way a lot of folks stop at the bank to get pocket money (esp folks who 'can't' /or/ refuse to use ATM's).

When I had my own Plumbing company I would write my paycheck to my name sign it and flip it over and endorse it. I had a lot of tellers refuse to cash it. They could not tell me WHY - they just knew it was wrong because they had not seen it before. After calling the management over 3 or 4 times to get my own money I found that if I made it to cash they were happy. Go figure.

The problem I faced many times is the seller never stated whom to make the check out to. They just give me their first name so I can't make it out to that. I have written a few cash check to sellers because of that.

If you are not comforatable with this, then talk to your Banker. This is exactly why we pay them such large fees.

I guess I never thought it would come into question, that this could be cashed. A check made out to cash is just that..same as cash. Your bank will cash it..no problem. I often make checks out to cash..for my wood delivery, my odd job person..they want cash, and this is a way to give them cash.
The buyer took a chance, however, since anyone can cash a check made out that way.
