Hi All! At a garage sale a couple of weeks ago, I picked up this little dohickey because it was cheap and interesting...and the sticker said is was "OLD". It's got a wooden "handle" with a metal blade-type piece in the top. On the handle are the words "Hook Scraper #25" and, etched in the metal blade is "MFD by Hook Scraper Co., Queen's Village, NY followed by a patent number. I'm curious as to what it is and what it was used for. Also, should I decide to list the thing on eBay, what category should I put it on? Thanks for any info.

Just glancing on eBay's finished auctions, it looks like it is a carpentry tool of some kind - kinda of hard to tell without a picture though.

Haven't taken photo of the thing yet so couldn't post a pic...I really don't know if it's going to be worth the effort! Was just curious and hoping that the name "Hook Scraper" would ring a bell with some astute AW-er! Thanks...

Just ran a new search and found one similiar so I'm enlightened! Tried a search right after I'd bought this but couldn't find one. Unfortunately, it's not some really rare and much-sought-after ancient tool worth millions! So much for my garage sale finds!

Blueyes29,
There is one offered on eBay right now, made by the same folks yours was. Just search for "Hook Scraper".

Thanks, rocketguy...Yeah, I saw that one too. I think the reason I couldn't find any that first time I looked was I typed it all as one word and added an extra "p"...ie: "hookscrapper". No wonder none showed up on the first search!

Hook scraper is a specialized scraper used by woodworkers -- name derives from it's shape. There probably are some out there that are highly collectible but they would early specimens by specific companies with highly sought-after blades. This is one of the hand tools that isn't used as much now as it used to be.

Thanks for info. Maybe I'll wait to put this litle tool on auction in 50 years time (if eBay and I are still around)...after everyone's thrown theirs away and the 3 Hook Scraper collectors in the known universe would sell their soul for one!

If it is a flat, slightly distorted teardrop shape blade, it is used for refinishing furniture to remove paint and finish from hard to get at places. These can be bought at hardware stores and have wood handles. (not to say that you don't have a vintage or antique one, but they are still made and very handy)
