Just wondering isn't it an invasion of our privacy to ask NEW SELLERS to give their bank account numbers. It frightens me because I have read so much about cyber crimes. Is this legal or has someone challenged this position. I like EBAY but this policy is very dangerous to the sellers.

I don't know about invasion, but I will not give them my personal info for exactly the reasons you mention. As a result, I cannot sell on eBay ... only buy

why not open a new bank account and fund it with the minimum requirement (some Credit Unions have a $5 minimum requirement) and give that to eBay? Everytime you send someone a check you give them your checking account #, so giving it out isn't such a big deal. It's how much money they might have access to. I believe eBay needs it for ID verification and to perform chargebacks whenever they feel like it. I could be wrong!

Not sure about your bank, but mine has forgotten what the term "customer service" means. They charge me even when I don't use my account, so I have no desire to open up another one and watch them take my money from that one too

I never could understand why I am allowed to buy on eBay without a credit card but not allowed to sell. They oughta know me by now as I have a growing positive feedback through my many purchases ...

RB,

You won't get hit with the inactivity fee if you start making BillPoint sales and eBay deposits the funds in your bank account. Just move the funds outta that account and into a safer one that eBay doesn't know about right after eBay does a deposit!

It's not just activity or lack of that they charge me for. For example, I have to pay a monthly fee for a statment. If they actually send me a statement, it costs more! I have to pay for deposits and withdrawls too, regardless of who does them. The only way I can beat these fees is to take out a Gold Account (or something like that). That one will only cost me 39.95 per month (D'Oh!!!!!!!!)

Can you tell that I am not a fan of banks or plastic money? If I was, I would assume they would be more valuable for a buyer then a seller. Perhaps eBay's logic in requiring this to sell is a bit twisted.

RB run and don't walk as fast as you can from that bank. I told someone yesterday that the day my bank starts charging me to make deposits is the day I leave. They are making money off of your deposits and if people would wise up and leave they wouldn't do this for long. For instance, our bank doesn't pay hardly anything on savings but the bank president just built a 400,000.00 home. I find it so interesting that our government says people aren't saving but with interest on savings a little over one percent it doesn't take a dummy to figure there are no incentives to make someone want to save. What gives?????

NEW SELLERS to give their bank account numbers

New U.S. sellers are by default given BillPoint accounts and BillPoint is placed in their listings. THAT is the reason for the bank account requirements.

Don't forget also that it's cheaper for eBay to take fees from a checking account than to bill a credit card and have to pay the card company a percentage. It's the same reason PayPal wants you to pay from checking accounts.

If I were looking to compete with eBay I'd jump all over this policy, though.
