So far it will not allow you to sign up.
That may cut down on the bidders a bit for the time being..........although I only saw about three things listed anyway.
(none of which are real)
Other than that, no problem!

I've viewed their site a couple of times but haven't done enough research to understand what will be different than eBay other than being another alternative. I have read other threads that mention their logo and name and I, personally, agree that from a marketing standpoint that there might be some problems with what I perceive as a "professional or marketable" look. I'm not saying that Ebay's primary color logo is the best, but unfornately, since they were on the scene first, that probably didn't affect them. I hope to hear more about (or read about) their adverstising campaign on this thread. How is this different than when Gold's auctions started up. I'm selling a specific vintage item that, even during the summer, has had nearly a 80% sell through rate. I'm assisting in selling a 25 year old collection. I'm sure items like these would not be easily transferred over to an alternative site since the object is to get the consignor higher prices which would not probably occur on the other site since the buyers haven't changed their habits yet. So what does the site start out with to get momentum? Reserve auctions? Items with a little higher minimum bid? Items not selling on ebay? Obviously, but is that enough to get a potential bidder to come back a second time if the items he's looking for aren't there? I'm sure it will be an up hill battle and I'm anxious to hear more information.

As will the fact that the site is not yet open for business.

A visit to gegy prompts the following thoughts:
Not a memorable name.
What is their unique selling proposition for buyers?
Who is the tasteless designer of the home page?
Why are they starting the guerilla marketing so early when there is nothing to see? They are wasting people's time and some will decide it is just another dud site.
Are they coming from an online auction background or just cashing in? (Very important!)
Why are all these alternate sites so much the same when differentiation is not only needed, but critical for success.
How much effort has gone into recruiting key sellers?
How will they attract bidders?
I guess it is too soon to tell, amd there is little to go on yet. Anyone can write code, but thoughtful design and effective marketing is key.

The car on the showroom floor gets the best milage, the best acceleration, the best handling, and the most comfortable ride.
Once you drive the car on the road of reality things aren't exactly like they were on the showroom floor. Until Gegy gets off the showroom floor I don't have a clue. I don't know what they are going to do any different than ePier, Bidville, etc, but I know that attracting buyers isn't easy.

Do they truly expect to earn even the slightest brand-name recognition with that logo and all those putrid looking characters? Who would want to remember that?
Furthermore, why encourage kids to browse the site, get an email address, password, etc? Sure, they have it separated for kids and adults, but does anyone truly believe that the kids will keep to their own section? And no, I'm not down on kids...have two peanuts of my own, but I don't want to be left holding the bag when little Susie goes on a bidding spree...

I agree that the man/troll/Nixon, or whatever you want to call him, is hideous. The green kid, too. But look at the gegy threads here and in the other auctions forum. Everybody is ranting about him. Maybe hideous=memorable.
Reminds me of an auction listing I saw a while back. The seller listed a ring with the title "The most godawful ugly ring you'll ever see" I HAD to look! It was ugly, too, and had alot of bids on it.
Most of the questions asked here were answered in the other auctions forum, too. I think they said the people involved have RL and online auction experience. And plan to spend most of their moolah to try to bring in buyers.

In response to julesy:
From what i have read at gegy.com, your kids would have their own user id and password and kids are NOT allowed to bid on ANYTHING. The only way your kids would be able to place a bid is if you gave them access to your user id and password. As for how they are going to stop a kid from registering as being over 18, I don't know. But there are other auction sites out there and they dont seem to have a problem with kids bidding on stuff. Only time will tell.
As for what uaru said:
I agree totally. They have not launched the site yet and most questions about them wont be answered until they do. What they say will happen could be different than what actually does.

Reddeer:
For starters, Gegy appears to have lied about not having any association with Auctioneagle (the Gegy owner spammed several Usenet boards in May about Auctioneagle). The owner also proclaims to be against spam, yet posted on Usenet in February, looking to hire someone to harvest 1 million email addresses from pre-selected sites.
The story is unfolding elsewhere. Some of the evidence is disappearing too although the usenet postings are still there (for now).

Hi folks,
Let's be careful about discussing issues that have happened at other message boards or over usenet groups - these types of discussions are considered inappropriate for the Auctionwatch Message Center.
Thanks,

reading on AW about Gegy-hype, I actually managed to register within the period you could do so.
Since then I get spam from auctioneagle.
Also have tried Gegy (after all those "serious competition" threads I was very disappointed)
Almost impossible (at least by eBay standards) to find anything. The initiation email said all auctions were make-believe, but go ahead and bid.... But where do you bid?
Where is that competition?

Morning All!
I just surfed over to the "other auction site" only to see a message from their hosting provider that they shut them down because of spamming............
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm
As for Gegy, I've been beta testing if you follow the beta boards they lay out a time table of whats going to be tested and when.
I haven't found it too confusing.
Have a good day!
Sid.

I am signed up for the beta testing and it has been tedious to keep track of what is happening. The thought of live auction's while intriguing it doesnt seem to support the type of auctioning that is condusive to the things I sell. I could see nice paintings and rare collectibles doing well but trying to get people to get online at the same time to bid an item seems a little unreal,in this real world. I would rather run like 7 day auctions myself like ebays forum. But then in all the confusion maybe they will allow these types. I just cant tell and the message boards or forums on site seem to be used all wrong and are confusing at best. As for Mr Green man I think they have gotten their point accross. People will remember him and the name. It has been proven on this posting borad already by many people. Ok Have a Super Day.. David

Gegy owner has now acknowledged that he was an investor in AuctionEagle, entered into a "per head' agreement to pay them for providing beta testers and has since seperated from a relationship with them.
Copies of his statement are appearing on other discussion forums.
The larger question, how do we work together to provide strong alternatives to eBay, remains unresolved.

hi reston - perhaps resolution is really right in front of us...
there are a number of sites - some merly copycat - others with viability.
While I've been reluctant to try others, I finally took the plunge with bargainandhaggle.
although sales have been good - their concept and design of site is even better.
Like anything, it takes a couple of listings to become more familiar, but their view of your listings (like my ebay) is much cleaner and also automatically shows the number of views.
Perhaps, there are sites currently existing, that need another look...
just a thought
