....I just got our notice from PayPal....

>Based on your transaction volume and the length of time you've had an account with us, we are pleased to inform you in advance that you have qualified for the lower Merchant Rate. This means your transactions will continue to be assessed just 2.2% + 30¢ for receiving payments, and sending money to others remains free.<

Good enough for me! It feels like I got promoted or something.

Now it's off to use that PP debit/credit card!

(and just call me 'Sir' from now on.....

Soldat2...you haven't been promoted, you've just been notified that on or about July 14 you won't be royally sc**ed like many other paypal sellers will be.

Paypal's rates are now 2.2% + 30 cents for ALL recipients of money transfers...starting 7/14/01, those sellers who normally recieve LESS than $1000 per month will be charged .7% more than before.

Trust paypal to make it sound like they are being nice to you when they announce a fee increase.

two fee increases in less than 30 days...these guys have nerve, I have to give them that!

they say that you can apply for the merchant rate if you can provide proof of a competitive offer from an established merchant service provider.

OK that being the case why don't you match it or beet it by 10% PayPal? where do I send a copy of merchant account? Beet .11 per authorization and .01775% PayPal

they were "Pals" when they were free now they are just pirates!

I always love companies who thinks the reader is so dumb that they can put anything in an announcement and not worry about someone actually analyzing what they are saying.

Would have been more respectful to simply say we going to raise rates again for the small users on the site. Instead, they try to pass this corporate mumbo-jumob on you.

Now - what is the logic of charging the small users more? Are they saying credit card companies give them a break base on the volume of each individual PayPal user?

By the way, I think they are now more expensive than having a direct merchant account via Costco.

"they say that you can apply for the merchant rate if you can provide proof of a competitive offer from an established merchant service provider."

I wonder if that applies to Billpoint's merchant rate of 1.7%?

I think they're just trying to pay the bills.

BillPoint is eating their lunch.

And they probably still won't break-even with this fee increase (the second in two weeks).

Watch for further increases in the near future.

OTOH...

Unless ya provide PP with your own personal Death Certificate, ya all probably qualify for the "NEW & NON-SPECIAL" rate!

tomwiii is right. Because we've been on the road pretty much the first half of this year, we've done about 1/4 the business we normally do (tried to make up for it yesterday).

Despite us processing less than their "average", PayPal extended us the merchant rate. So....as long as you are breathing, you can probably qualify for the merchant rate.

Or perhaps they take into account your long term sales and not just the last few months despite what their announcement says.

I don't know that I've every had $1000 in sales all flow through Paypal, but I qualified for their merchant rate.

I KNOW I've never made Billpoint's $1000/month figure, but I have a merchant account there too...

Never hurts to ask - you might get lucky - I'm sure both services would rather have merchant customers than no customers...

I agree with "commentary" that Paypal is playing wordgames with their increased fees.

Frankly I am totally dismayed at the lack of honesty in the on line operations, Paypal, eBay, Half.com, Yahoo, Amazon are all guilty of constantly bending the truth. It makes them look like shady operations, and certainly doesn't inspire this stockholders confidence.

Of course, the stockholder's report is probably where they learned how to play these word games, but there is a price for that - lower stock prices.

Obfuscation and disinformation and damned outright lies are why the government will eventually intervene in internet businesses to all our detriment. They are just asking for it by being so blatant in their bending of the facts. Pity.

Hey Airguy, where did you get that rate? My merchant account is 1.53% + .20 and I thought I was doing good.

Everyone write to Paypal and tell them they aren't going to accept Paypal transactions until the rates drop back down (and please follow through). 2.9% +.35!!!!!!! aaaaargggghhhhhhh ............

apparently not. i, for instance, didn't qualify. i'm definitely NOT happy about yet another rate increase that will affect me - within two weeks yet! found a way to deal with the last one, but this one will lose me as a paypal customer. not sure what i'll end up doing, but am going to look more closely at c2it.

the only good thing about this is that this time they emailed us about it, rather than my having to find out about it here!

I didn't qualify for the merchant rate either. I love it, too much business for a personal account, not enough for a PP merchant account! I honestly do not understand how PP thinks that they can effectively raise the fees TWICE in TWO WEEKS and not have a significant number of sellers bail on them. Is the latest increase really enough to offset how many sellers will go elsewhere?

Well, I'm done with PP - that was the last straw for me. The least they could do is not treat us like morons...the spin they put on fee increases being "simplifications" and such makes me want to puke!

Argh

Paypal is a thing of the past. I see they still have an unsatisfactory rating from the BBB. Like another member said billpoint will swallow them up.

You know what happened, they have been sitting on this waiting for a free listing day with a few million extra listings

They know that there will be a few more million ads launched and then relisted. They raise their rates because you'll have to swallow the fees because of all the ads you have out there. I have 1000+ auctions going until July 8th monies will trickle in from those for a few weeks and people will want to use PayPal because it is on the ad. Also many people I will relist all those auctions so there will be auctions that were listed last night closing for weeks or months that have been relisted over and over.

Well it's on the ad now, but you see I host the PayPal logo myself, it's the only payment service I do host the picture for, so all I have to do is change the picture and it can be a picture of a check, dollar bill, the no PayPal logo, or toilet paper for that matter.

Actually I think I'll keep taking PayPal for those that want to use it, after all it is for their convince and most of the time there is a fee associated with convince. What about raising shipping 3.50, that is still less that the 5.00 bidpay wants for a MO. If you pay with a Money order you can deduct the 3.50, if you pay with a check you pay the 3.50 or maybe 2.50 but I wont hold checks anymore everything will ship the same day.

Now of course I'll probably be out of business tomorrow but if everyone did it...................no PayPal would catch on and raise their per use fee to 3.50 plus 2.9%.

remember they hit us with fees the first time at Christmas because they knew they had us.

I bet they had it planned for months to hit with another increase on the next free listing day and it was poor timing, on ebays part where PayPal is concerned, to have had the free listing day now only weeks after the last increase.

From the policy updates page:

Members with a proven online sales track record or a competitive offer from an established merchant services provider may apply for the Merchant Rate.

Hmmm, I wonder what "proven online sales track record" means in PPspeak? I'm not a powerseller but I've been with ebay and PayPal for a couple of years, 1100+ sales, no negs, and no chargebacks - wonder if I qualify for the "lower" rate?

Feel free to jump in Damon if you're around.

(If it weren't for that debit card...)
