This is the latest installment of my computer woes. Nearly two weeks ago Gateway determined I had a bad hard drive in the computer we've only owned for 15 months. Replacing the hard drive went OK, not great, but OK. Every day since then (just this past Tuesday) I've been on the phone with Gateway trying to clear up minor problems but now we have encountered a major problem.
After installing the hard drive our Outlook Express program worked correctly for only about one day. Since then it is v-e-r-y slow. Slow to open and very slow to switch from my husband's id to mine. But the worst is that his emails addressed to his email address, are delivered to me instead. The accounts have been reset up several times and it doesn't make any difference. Every tech I talk to a Gateway has me try a million different things and NOTHING has helped. It is extremely frustrating. Do I just give up and sign up with Hotmail or Yahoo for my email?

Hello mapledr1216 You may have a corrupted .dbx folder, file or .dll. You could also have a corrupted identities folder. I don't have much time right now to help you since I'm on my way out but these two sites are excellent for troubleshooting Outlook Express.

The two sites were very interesting and the solutions mentioned for my problems were way over my head and obviously over the head of the Gateway tech's since they didn't mention any of them.
After another prolonged discussion with Gateway it's been decided that I should take the tower to the nearest Gateway store and let them have a go at it there. We are leaving for vacation on Sunday so thankfully it won't be too much of an inconvenience to be without the computer. I only hope that they actually get it fixed correctly!

Hi again mapledr1216. If Gateway can't fix the problem just post back here and I'll try to help you. The hardest part is trying to narrow down the cause for the OE problem so you will need to keep a detailed list describing the EXACT error message you're receiving, if any.
Have you ever used McAfee VirusScan? The slowness issue of your Outlook Express program can be related to uninstalling an earlier version of McAfee VirusScan and then reinstalling a later version.
You could also have a damaged protected storage registry key.
One more thing, check your start-up files to see if there's a program running when you start up Windows that shouldn't be there. You can do that by going to START and then click on RUN and type in msconfig and then OK. Click on the START-UP tab in the SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY box. If you aren't sure if a program should be listed in there just make a list of everything.

Thanks again Blanche, especially for your generous offer.
After reading thru the sites you mentioned, I also feel it is a damaged protected storage registry key. I will mention that possibility to Gateway when I take it in. I'll let you know in about 10 days whether Gateway fixes it correctly!
