Good morning all,

I'm not sure when it started because I haven't searched on eBay in a few days. This morning when I do a search, Netscape 4.7 locks up and stops responding. It does it whether I search just titles or titles and descriptions.

The page gets loaded to just where it's going to show the results of the search.

I ran a scandisk and defragged (with the option to fix anything that was wrong), but after that, I'm clueless. I also cleared my cache.

Anyone having this problem and know how to fix it?

Thanks in advance,
Sadie

sadie: I've been having that exact same problem for a while now. So is a friend who uses 4.7 She reloaded version 5 and it seems to work okay for her, so I may try that too as I really prefer Netscape to IE.

It almost seems like the browser is hanging on the doubleclick ads. This problems never happened before AOL took over Netscape.

I hope someone with some computer expertise can help out here and explain what is happening.

Browsers have a tendency to get stupid. Close Netscape. Then go into your netscape folder and delete your history and cookie files. Restart Netscape and try again that should do it.

When I'm browsing a lot of listings after
an eBay Search, I've had Netscape 4.77 hang
totally while trying to load what appear to be AOL banner ads.

I can dump cookies and clear cache, and it doesn't help.

I have to shut down Netscape. Then I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, and the "Close Program" window
appears. Lo and behold, Netscape is still listed as if it is still running. I highlight
Netscape and click "End Task". I usually get
a second box saying the program is not responding, and I have to click "End Task" again. Then I can re-open Netscape, and it does fine.

The only other solution to clear the problem is to completely
reboot my computer.

Thank you all! I'll try the history/cookie thing and if that doesn't help, maybe I'll go to version 5.

Just a note: it doesn't seem to happen when I search in the categories, just at the main search page.

It figures once aol got their icky fingers on it, it wouldn't be as good. Any day now, I'll hear the mighty Steve Case saying, "You've got spam!"

I use Netscape 4.75, and have never had a problem using eBay's search feature.

Oh Lordy...I'm glad to hear others are having the same problems I am!! My Netscape has been acting up for about 2 months now...it just freezes up for no apparent reason...I can always tell when it's going to happen if I'm using one of my bookmarks because the bookmark file doesn't disappear...it stays on top of my browser page. I was going to download the latest version of Netscape but CNN's review was not a glowing one...decided to live with rebooting my computer until the bugs are worked out of Netscape 5. I will try some of the advise here to see if that helps!

This is UNBELIEVABLE......SO AM I!! I thought it was something with my puter but after reading this I am not so sure. I have had more damn lockups and freezeups in the last few weeks than I have in years.....and its not just cruising ebay. I have dumped the history, cache, defragged, ran Norton disk doctor , done everything but pitch the damned thing out the window......I have a new Netscape disk...Version 6 that I ordered several months ago but 4.7 was working so well I have not installed the new one. Besides I heard it had bugs....anyone used Netscape version 6??????

I found that if it stops loading it is because the site I am visiting has tried to open another window.

Just as janusaries said -

Whenever it freezes like that I shut all the VISABLE copies of netscape and then do the Control/Alt./Delete and there will be one or more copies of Netscape shown as running with no window visable and no icon in the task bar.

End task the "invisable" copy running and it will be OK until you visit a site that triggers it again.

gravid: When I try the three finger salute approach it closes all the Netscape windows.

Why has this suddenly started happening with Netscape?

I've tried everything suggested here, though my hard drive was on the fritz and have given up and use IE most of the time now. But I hate the IE favorites or bookmark system, especially for eBay as I sometimes like to double bookmark a link so I can find it faster among all the others if it is something I particularly want to check back on later. IE will only allow one bookmark per url. It's also a pain in 'dabut' to have to close the frame window everytime. I hate IE and want to use Netscape, but this is driving me nuts.

I'm wondering why this problem has started with Netscape, and it's certainly just started within the last three months or so. What has changed. And why do the older versions not have this problem?

I am using Netscape 6.1 without any problems.
I think that 6.2 is out now too.

Nav 4.7x is notoriously buggy in EVERYTHING.

6.1 is a lot better.

Whatever you do DO NOT download Netscape 6.0 or 6.01. This is the worst unfinished crap ever sent out. Slow, buggy to a bizarre level. Download the 6.1 "beta" test version instead. It is lightyears better and much faster. I use Netscape because I find the personal toolbar much faster than the Explorer "favorites". Plus forms completion etc is much better in Netscape 6.

adone36The Netscape 6.0 that I have is on CD that I ordered several months ago....Is it just the downloadable version 6.0 with bugs????? or 6.0 period. I have never had a complaint with 4.7 which is why I never upgraded. Just Curious!

6.1 is only a beta test available for download. The download is about 24 meg I believe. But as to the CD: toss it in the garbage for sure, it has severe bugs. So bad you can't imagine them releasing it unless some bigwig said "we"re past deadline! Send it anyway!

I use Netscape 4.77 also. For the last month or so we have been having problems. We thought it was just the places that my husband and little boy go to causing the problems although, the problems were not there before.

It hangs, slows downs, and about the only remedy for it is to reboot and start again.

There seem to be a lot of pop-up adds, and then starts. Always trying to sell something to you. These never popped up before. I believe they are what is causing our problem.
