Evening All!

I just checked my E-Bay to see how my ending items did tonight and found that on one of the books the winning bidder bid a chunk of chage more than the stated retail price on the book. This is a brand new book and should be fairly easy to get.

My inner capitalist is saying to let the deal stand but my inner moralist is saying that it's wrong to charge the person more than the stated retail price.
My inner realist is also sarcastically saying - "GEE if only we could have this problem EVERY day."

Anywhooo, any advice?
Thanks,
Sid.

Maybe this person is not in an area that they can get the book without driving an hour or so. I figure it must be worth it to them. Or maybe they simple to do know the retail value. Or possible they have been trying to get it for a while and said " this one is not getting away!"

Enjoy it while it lasts. Once upon a time it was fairly common for ebay auctions to exceed retail prices. Kind of a rarity these days. Make a printout of the auction and frame it on your wall. It will be a nice memory in times to come.

That sounds like a great problem to have! I don't think you should think twice about it, you did your part by stating the value up front.

Sometimes I think winning at ebay is kind of like Vegas, you pay for the fun and excitement of it all. Just MHO.

Whenever I have a bidder go bonkers with the bidding war, I throw in free shipping...I tell them "Thanks for a very exciting auction!" Much more polite than telling them they OVERBID!

I have a book ending soon for almost three times retail, and I know what you mean. BUT, I feel they know what they want, so let it go....like other posters say, it's a rarity! I will also throw in free PRIORITY shipping! It has been exciting watching it, it more than doubled just today! Wheeee!!!!!

I see this at live auctions also.
I was at one recently where a fellow was buying everything. He obviously had about 10 or 15K he HAD to spend. He was bidding over new price on a SEARS shop vac. It was explained to me that some of these guys feel they have to buy stuff or they have wasted their day. I always felt that if I had wasted my time there was no sense or advantage to throwing good funds away on top of lost time.

I had the same moral dilemma of items getting bid higher than retail repeatedly, so I started putting the suggested retail in my auction descriptions, thinking this would stop over priced bidding from happening, the results changed nothing in fact on some items the winning bids went even higher than before. I think many folks don't care about the retail price, if they really want an item they are willing to pay anything for it....

Thanks for the great advice all! I think I will take my tidy little profit and buy a little treat for myself.....

siddielou - Enjoy your profits.

I'm one of those buyers who will sometimes pay what I know is more than retail.

It saves me the 5 1/2 hour (round trip) driving (and gas) to get to the nearest big city to purchase that I'm interested in. If it's sometime I can order online, I do so. But many-a-time I am looking for something I want to give as a gift that I can't find online. So I'm more than willing to pay the 'extra' money for the convenience alone.

Like Linda_K said (waving to Linda!), there can be good reasons people pay more..including get caught in the heat of bidding!

Could be rural, could be in a area where this has sold out, could be home bound & shopping for a gift, could be from overseas where it's not easily available.

Back when Tamagotchi's were hot, you couldn't buy them locally for love nor money. The stores had waiting lists for them.

I happened to visit my sister in a more rural section of the country where the stores had shelves of them! They just hadn't caught on there. I bought them there & brought them back & made some people very happy campers, along w/some nice profits. Go figure!

eventer - waving back to you.

My husband and I enjoyed your 'what the family has learned from FLDs' post. He could identify with almost all of it.
