Greetings Earthlings,
I was just writing up descriptions and kept finding myself saying: I'd gladly pay ebay an extra ....say, .10¢ for an extra 7 to 10 characters in the title line!
Maybe they could call it an extended title option or something.
Especially considering that description search is sometimes out of kilter and the old alleged "no decription search if item gets bids within 1st 24 hr" bug that they have not to my knowledge fixed yet, and other good reasons as well.
I think it would be surprisingly useful with more benefits to consider, I'm sure.

Frist I wouldnt pay them for this feature my self.
also I have been working with Auction
software scripts the tiles are limited to 72 characters for a reason 72 is a full line of text.
more then 72 would make the tile spill over in to a second line.
more characters would also make there little purple auction tile and item number box longer causeing the item pages to scroll side to side when the item pictue is next to it like when you use the bin feature.
would also make up dateing search data base take longer and changes would need to be made to that as well.
these are just two of the down falls items already dont get added to search for 24 to 36 hours and veiws and bidding dont pick up till items are in the search.

I agree whole-heartedly that auction titles should be longer. Sometimes I feel like my titles are in secret code that is only understandable to me. It is especially tough with books, where you'd like to put both the complete title, and the author's name. Not to even mention a few keywords.
A lot of times I used to just put the things with really long titles on yahoo, since they allowed more space. I think I remember hearing that they cut down their max allowable characters now too though so it isn't an option any more.
Interesting facts you bring up. Nothing's insurmountable though. If they can extend the search to entire descriptions, perhaps an extra line in the title wouldn't be too big of a deal. I don't know the tech stuff though, I guess I'm just tormented with logical mind and a lack of insight.
CAgrrl, Yahoo allowed more characters at one time? If they could do it, why not....?

yeah im not saying its not workable Yahoo does allow a few more letters in your Title but they are not trying to fit that title in to a small tabled area with out scrolling side to side like ebay is
There title table is a sort of trade mark for them anyone really want ebay to be a yahoo look a like ???

"and the old alleged "no decription search if item gets bids within 1st 24 hr" bug that they have not to my knowledge fixed yet"
Alleged is right. I put an item on this afternoon, got a bid in 4 - 6 hours, and I CAN do a description search on it (using words only in the description).

Hi Capotasto,
Maybe they fixed it, perhaps it never was?
I recall a few threads here months ago regarding this issue. Now that you made me think about it (darn you) I'm not sure exactly how it went.
If I have it right, the rub went that if your item got a bid within 24 hrs of its listing, description search for that item would be disabled even if the box is checked. I think I also recall that ebay acknowledged that this was so. The concensus was, I believe, to use as much key word info in your title as you could to safeguard.
Maybe I have it wrong, could it be that if it got a bid within the first hour, before it was indexed into the system (like if someone came across the item while checking your seller list). But I don't want to breed any rumors or confuse it. I really don't recall exactly how the story went or if it even turned out to be true.
I'd still wish I had more space at least 50% of the time, even just a few letters. And I'd pay for it (within reason), as it would be a truly useful feature.

I'm not unhappy with the title length. If anything, I would like to see it shortened so sellers can't include words like: rare, l@@k, Wow, etc.
