Today at a garage sale I bought a pretty copper set. It's one of those mini-dust pans with a matching scraper-thing that people use to brush crumbs from a dinner table. I think it's old--at least not very new--and the handles look like 1930s black plastic or such. I'm going to sell them on ebay but need to know the offical name. All I can think of is "crumb catcher" but I'm sure that's not right. Any thoughts? ~Adele

Your gizmo is a crumber.

The names are regional. Where I come from it is called a Silent Butler.

Aha! Silent Butler. That's! what I was trying to remember. Crumber is also interesting; perhaps I'll have them both in the title. Thanks, people.

In the southwest, we call them crumb trays.

In the north it is a crumber. When I was a kid many years ago I couldn't wait until dinner was over so I could use the crumber. I guess you could say we made our own entertainment.

Forgot one thing. Wasn't the silent butler used for emptying ashtrays not crumbs?

It's probably English, and here it's called a crumb & brush set.

I always thought a silent butler had a lid and a gizmo on it that let you open and close the lid, while a cumber was like a miniature dust pan. Not a bit sure though.

a silent butler has a lid, usually with a thumb latch to open it, you dump ashtrays or crumbs into the silent butler.

Crumb set.

Rarriffle is right about the silent butler. The only thing I would add is that it has a (often wood) handle.

This may also be called a crumb sweeper or a crumb duster.

I never dreamed there'd be so many names for one little set. Thanks, all.

My wife said it's a "table duster picker-upper thingy"...
