Just wanted to find out if anyone else has had this problem. Over the last couple of days I've tried to list an item at Ebay. I keep getting this pop-up window asking if I want to download an Active X Control from iPix. I don't use Ebay's picture services and I've been told to stay away from Active X Controls so I clicked no. Every single time I did, I was unable to list my item. I tried every way I could think of to list the item without downloading the Active X Control, to no avail. I finally called Ebay to report the problem and was informed the only way I could stop the window from popping up and list my item was to download the Active X Control. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a way around it? Ebay is now dictating what we have to download onto our computers in order to do business there?

I tried iPix briefly, but I didn't like it at all. This was before they had the mandatory Active X control you're speaking of. I think I do remember that pop up though, but since I don't use iPix I just closed it and it has never shown up again.
One way around it is to find another (better) way to have your pics hosted.

Actually ebay is not dictating what programs you have to install to do business there.
Most browsers since version 4.0 come with many activex controls built in that run with out the users even noticeing.
If you have an older browser or you only down load the minium browers you will find there were many moduals missing from it.
you do have to be carefull of some active x controls you are asked to down load when surffing personal web site as they can be used to simply collect a list of files and folder and directories in your computer and some other information hackz would find usefull.
I Dont use Ipix but I would guess they are useing activex to make it posiable for user to be able to read there HD so they can just go to the picture directoy to choose picture they want to FTP upload for there listing on ebay.
Since Ipix is not on ebays server the activex control would allow you to send your picture to the remote ipix server.
my guess is you could avoid the active x control in two ways one launch your auctions and picture from a service like AW or use mister lister go to ipix and register for a account with ipix to host your picture and type in your picture urls.

Thanks to loosecannon and dman3 for the input. I have a brand new Dell Pentium 3 1000 running IE 5.5. I wish I could just click no once and be done with it, but that's not the case. Every single time I try to list an item I get to the select category page, I select a category and the next page tries to load to select a sub-category. That's when the trouble begins. The iPix window opens, I select no and then I am thrown back to the page asking for my user name and password. I type it in again and then it lets me continue all the way to the verification page. When I hit the verify button, I get the dreaded page cannot be dispayed, check your setting....etc. Just to test my theory, I went into the other room and used my wife's computer and got the same results. It wasn't until I allowed the download of the Active X Control that it allowed me to complete the listing. Something is mighty fishy here. Why should I have to download an Active X Control when I don't even use their service? I wish someone more with more technical knowledge than I have would look into this. I know it sounds paranoid, but I can't help but think this is not a desirable situation for a number of Ebay users.

The error your describeing though has nothing to do with not down loading an active X control that has to do with Ebay server glitch the preview page is not not loading that is a tipical for listing at ebay reviseing your listing and relisting .

Then why does it continue to do it on my computer? It did the very same thing on my wife's computer, then all of a sudden it stopped as soon as I allowed the download and hasn't done it since on her's.

". Every single time I try to list an item I get to the select category page, I select a category and the next page tries to load to select a sub-category. That's when the trouble begins. "
ANOTHER SOLUTION
Just under the sub-category boxes it says "select here if you cannot select a subcategory" or some such thing.
GO TO THAT LINE ASAP
and click on it. Do not wait for the full page to load.
A new page will come up where you select your category the old fashioned (and better) way... continue without problems.

Thanks to capotasto and dman3.
I think I found yet another solution to the problem. There is a box that is checked under the boxes where you put your username and password. It states "remember my username and password" or something to that effect. Being the paranoid I am, I was unchecking that box. In an attempt to pinpoint the problem, I decided to leave it checked and it seems to have solved the problem. I'll try it again in the next day or two and see if it really did solve it.
Thanks again for everyone's help.
