I have just received a notice that a cheque I cashed 3 weeks ago from a fellow Canadain has bounced. Trouble is I sent the item out in the mail yesterday.

I have e-mailed the buyer professionally stating that the cheque has bounced and to please send a money order ASAP. I'm not sure if he will do this or not.

I was wondering as a last resort are there any collection agencies in Canada that I can submit the outstanding amount to? I don't think the ones touted here would collect on a Canadain address as they are US based.

Talk to your bank and see what recourse you have through them. If the $$ are low, a collection agency might be more trouble than it's worth.

If you haven't left feedback yet (and you receive no satisfaction from the bidder), you can make an appropriate notation in his feedback.

Since yu are in Canada as well - get your bank to resubmit the cheque -- they can check if there are funds and as soon as there are - wham!!! Grab!!

What was their feedback rating? In 3 years I have only had 3 bounced checks, and all of them were honest mistakes by the buyers, all were made good as soon as they could issue a replacement.

I would certainly give them benefit of doubt until proven otherwise, most likely it was just a screw-up. These things do happen, and good bidders will of course take care of it promptly. Just don't jump all over them unless something really screwy takes place.

Good luck.

I think the main thing that would make me think the worst before thinking the best in a situation like that is knowing that the person who bounced the check knew that it bounced WAY before you did! So, if their intentions were honorable, wouldn't they probably be inclined to contact you as soon as they knew about it to handle the matter??

Traditionally, the accountholder is advised pretty much IMMEDIATELY that they have an nsf item and it is usually anywhere from a few days to a week or more later that the person on the other end is notified...

This is my first bounced cheque. I notified the buyer - I didn't degrade them or anything but I did state to make out a money order ASAP. They contacted me a few hours later and notified there was a banking error, that they will be sending out a money order and that they had received their goods. I always have the feedback as a last resort. I think it's just a matter of time to see if they do send the money (I hope).
