I was looking at a friend's recent feedback and then noticed one of his buyers had the following message on their feedback page:
<blockquote>
User _____ (private) has elected to make their Feedback Profile private so comments are not available for public viewing at this time.
</blockquote>
While it didn't give the number, it did give the number of postives, negatives, and neutrals -- so you can do the math on your own. In this case, he had no negatives -- so I'd probably still deal with him. But I found it odd that I could not read the feedback comments.

If he had no negs, the purpose was probably just to keep his private purchases private. I wouldn't have any qualms dealing with a person in that case...Now, if they have private fb & there ARE negs it would be another story. Sometimes just one neg can be a very bad one, like writing bad checks or using stolen credit cards. I had to leave a neg for being burned cuz the buyer used a stolen credit card. I wanted everybody to see that before somebody else got burned. Obviously the 'buyer' could just make their fb private or change their ID but atleast I did what I could to let people know about him.

I have a question along this subject. If a person is trying to 'hide' what they are buying with Private Feedback, can't someone still do a "bidder" search. You can search by bidder and see all items that a user has bid on in the past 30 days (I think it is 30). If so, then that reason, Private FB would do no good.
I would lean toward if they had negs and it was private, then sorry.
But if all is clear and private, then ok.
I DO check what my buyers have bought recently. Not to really see what they've bought specifically as much as to see if they bought in the same category, bought things more expensive (so I know they will pay), etc.

Even when there is feedback exchanged on a private auction, in place of the item # it says 'Private'. Still no need to hide. I guess I'll never figure them out!

Yes, but lots of folks probably don't know that. When I was a newbie, I didn't. Never really thought about it.
After finding AW and learning from the "pros", I was a bit miffed at first that someone could look into my private business!
I got over it, have since learned to use it a lot. For basically the same reason as someone already mentioned. To see what another buyer is bidding on and the price range they bid in! As a buyer, I then get a feel for how high I'll probably have to go to beat them. As a seller, I get excited 'cause maybe this person will start a bid war on my item since they are not shy with their bids!
