I am not sure if this has been discussed yet here. If it has and I missed it, I apologized.
I was just going to help a friend register as a seller today. She wanted to use her email address as her nickname. She couldn't.
Not only that, she was unable to register as a seller because she HAD TO give her bank account information. THERE WAS NO CHOICE ABOUT IT. It wouldn't accept her registration without the bank info. She declined to give it, and won't be selling on ebay as a result.

CAgrrl: This is true. It is my understanding that eMail addresses as User I.D.s are no longer available at the time of registration. Folks that already have established accounts with eMail addresses as their user I.D.s are permitted.... AND, I believe (if it's not already in place - it will be) that when you change user I.D.s from an eMail address to a Nickname User I.D., that folks won't be able to change BACK to an eMail address as a User I.D.
Regarding the criteria for seller... this is true also. In order to sell on eBay, you must provide banking information.
I've also heard (rumor? - but I haven't remembered to ask the PTB specifically about this yet) that NEW sellers signing up at eBay will automatically be registered with Billpoint - eBays online payment option... unless they Opt-OUT.
(I really should have asked about this recently) - I'd be willing to get some more information about this and report back to this thread, if anyone in interested...

CAgrrl, could your friend open a second small (maybe no-fee) account? I've done that so that I can deal with PayPal, half, and Amazon. This way, they can have a bank number, but since I only keep a few bucks in the account they have access to, they can't destroy my life when, inevitably, one of them errs.

As I understand at this time this is just for new USers as every new seller and buyer is automatically registered to billpoint.
Billpoint needs sellers bank info because they Tranfer payments to your checking account.
this came about with there new Intant purchase feature for BIN Auctions and store fronts sales.
what I did when I started accepting paypal and billpoint was to set up second checking account at my bank they offer free no interest checking with debit card the whole 9 yards that I use just for this.
I used this checking account to have payment sent to I used the debit card number as my Crdit card number for Ebay to get there monthly payments from.

I was helping a few ladies sign up on eBay just this past week. In order to list something for sale they had to enter bank account info as well as a CC. Yes, they had to opt out of billpoint. Then, they had to create a "seller account" and then they had to be "Id verified", where they had to not only pay 5 dollars but then enter personal info and their driver's license info.
Wow, when I signed up for eBay, I don't remember even entering a credit card, just name and address, phone and user name and password. Those were the days.

New sellers have no choice , can't even pre pay your account. They will get us oldtimers sooner or later , or at least try. I've noticed that they are getting slower at crediting my account when I send them a payment.

Wow!! The times are changing. When I started on eBay 3 years ago they even gave you $10.00 credit so you could start listing right away.

Is this new requirement of supplying you bank info the eBay Pay Direct for sellers I have been seeing plastered all over eBay?
Does this mean that if you want to sell on eBay you can no longer pay the fees with your credit card?
One thing about Pay Direct....eBay won't have to pay any more credit card fees when they bill for their fees. I see this as one more way eBay is trying to increase revenues.
So a new seller has to pay fees through direct debit from their bank account, plus supply a credit card number, (I guess in case they have no $$$ in their bank account. Plus agree to accept Billpoint, or at least open an account.
*And* do the verified ID if they don't have a credit card? Or will all new sellers have to pay the $5.00 to be ID verified anyway?
Next thing they will want is copy of your passport.
