I thought the same way at one time, but then I learned the truth. I had a name brand computer with all OEM parts that the hard drive went bad a couple of months after the computers 1 year warranty had run out. I accidentally found out that the hard drive (don't remember what brand it was) was covered under the manufacturers warranty for 3 years so I still got it replaced for free. I don't know if all brands are like this, but some are.

It depends on the drives model or serial number.
Drives with FRU numbers are IBM drives that have a warranty that is attached to the IBM machine they are installed in.
OEM drives that have no FRU number are drives that were manufactured and sold by IBM and may or may not have a warranty depending on who IBM sold them to.

For example Compaq buys drives for it's Presario notebooks and pays less for the drives because IBM is not picking up the warranty but a large independent computer builder buys the same model drives for sale at a computer show and pays a little more because IBM it covering the warranty.
You would need the model and serial number of the drive to check with IBM to be sure, most likely these guys on eBay bought the drives from some third party vendor and have no idea what type of warranty they really have.
