I have an auction close under $10.00. I state money orders or c2it in my ad. I received a check for this auction. No big deal. However, the check is from someone other then who I am sending the item too. Different last name, different address, same town.
I told her I will accept the check but I need to call the writer of the check. She emails and says it is her sister that is never home and I will only get a machine. Her sister will not make a long distance call back. Her sister is never home at all because she is taking care of her sick mother.
Sounds very strange to me. How do I know it is not a stolen check? maybe the person on the checks does not even know the check is missing?

RichieRich - I've had this happen to me twice when I was selling. They both explained another person would be paying. One explained she had a trust account, the trustee paid for her expenditures from that account, and the other said she had over-extended herself and that her mother would be paying me. I had no problems.
But, I always say go with what feels comfortable to you.

I had this happen once. I called the people who wrote the check to double-check with them, as both the name and address on the check were different than the info the buyer emailed me. Turns out it was her parents, and for some reason they sent the payment out. ??? They okayed it and everything was alright in the end.
