From auctionbytes ....eBay Implements Promised Policy Changes
"eBay announced it has made available the promised seller opt-out feature
on its "Recommendations Email" policy. See June 25th Newsflash for
background and check the eBay announcement board for details."
From Ebay Announcement board
....we have implemented an option that allows sellers to opt-out of the "similar item" content of these emails. Once a seller opts-out, unsuccessful bidders for that seller's auctions will no longer receive emails containing the similar item content, including the list of seller's other items, which is currently at the top of the email. Further, sellers that opt out will not have their items included in similar item content sent to bidders that have lost an auction.

THAT is the Ebay equivalent of Neener, neener, neener!
Big Deal. Most bidders probably already discard these e-mails as spam/junk anyway. I know I do.
Anyone really interested in a particular item SEARCHES for it manually, and isn't leaving anything up to any automated system (ie; recommedation e-mail, personal shopper, etc).
It's actually more inefficient to follow through on items the system thinks you MIGHT be interested in, when you can simply search directly yourself and get right to the heart of what you're looking for.
If it's a rare item, then bidders will search for it themselves, and if it is not rare, then you don't need any help finding it. Also, part of the fun of Ebay is browsing.

I haven't received one of those similar items emails in weeks...I thought maybe ebay shut it down when I was away on vacation. So people are still actually receiving these?

Ha! I just went to do the 'opt out' thing and guess what - it says it will take up to 14 DAYS for the change to be reflected in your account - why so long???
2) after having this set up, i got a call from someone at ebay, about this, saying "it looks like something is accidentally set up at your site". i told him it was .procmailrc - if ebay didn't want those messages, don't send them to me. he said "you can opt-out", which i notified him that "opt-out = SPAM". he tried a couple other things, i said "as is well known on the internet, opt-out=SPAM". he then asked if *he* could change my preferences, and i said "well, since i never signed up for them in the first place, you can remove me from any spam lists you want".
i subsequently talked with a techie at ebay, i'm trying to get permission to mention what was said...but suffice it to say, techies there KNOW about the spam, and don't support it.
it's good that some people here know that ebay spams with "opt-out". some ebay cheerleaders don't...
