I cannot understand why more sites, especially Ebay, aren't 100% compatable with IE. It seems most people use IE--and for good reason: it is the most convenient and reliable--whereas Netscape, for instance, is the single worst I've ever seen. I can't believe they're still in business.
Why not more IE compatability?

One reason most web site arent 100% IE compatable is because as hard as it is for some to believe and understand over 40% of the internet comunity Aren't useing IE.
Right now nescape is the Browser most AOL users use AOL being the largest or near largest provider of internet service, as well Netscape is open source and I beleave it is the only graphic browser ported to Linux and unix operateing systems.
there is 10% to 20% of the internet comunity use useing Unix and linux and that number is on the rise every day, Microsoft will never open the source to IE Since win98 win ME and win2000 was released the Internet explorer is the windows operateing system, to make this code open source would make any version of window free to down load for all includeing source code to modify it.
There would be so many hacked up and hacked togeather version of windows out there it would make your head spin.
Concidering the better part of all Computer in the world runs windows operatieing systems includeing but not limited to Goverments Makeing windows open source could even be a huge security risk in many ways and its not really that secure as it is.
I Would think the question that needs to be asked and would be more to the ponit is why these companies can't get there acts togeather so there can be standard HTML & programing That works for all browsers..

Blame Microsoft, not any one site. Microsoft hopes there are lots of people like you who think everyone should be forced to bow down at the altar of Bill Gates and pay HIM to let people view their sites. Microsoft's tactics have always been to keep their stuff just secret enough and incompatible enough to prevent full integration with other browsers. It's a fancy protection racket no better than mobsters shaking down a business.
I have used Netscape for years and love it and won't switch to IE until there really is no choice.

To put it nicely, since some see fit to be rude, NETSCAPE SUCKS, as does AOL.
What a perfect fit! You have a substandard ISP and a substandard browser to go with it! What a great match!
And I could care less how much money Bill Gates makes. He deserves it for offering superior software.
Let the AOL/Netscape lemmings suffer with their terrible connections and awful operation.

Rude? Don't be so sensitive.
I don't use AOL as an ISP or its browser. I use its email because it is nice to check to see when AOL buyers have read my emails. Period.
The judgment that Microsoft products are superior is a subjective opinion (and, in this case, not supported by a single fact). In any event, I did not criticize the Microsoft product; I criticized Microsoft's business tactics. I did not extoll Netscape's virtues, I just said I loved it. Both products obviously meet the needs of their users, but I wouldn't start a war over it nor get my panties in a bunch defending one or the other.
Now smile and have a nice day.

I guess I simply cannot understand anyone choosing Netscape over IE. Netscape isn't even close to operating with the speed and efficiency of IE.
Not even close.

On the other hand there are die hard netscape users who have tried IE and find it a bulky clucky waist of hard drive space.
The sad fact is that as more and more new people get computers and get involed with the internet more and more have never used another browser other then internet explorer never heard of netscape and dont even relize what they are useing is a web browser.
in fact I help many people around where I live who are just getting there frist computers and many of these people refer to AOL and its software and BBS as the internet.
in fact I know one old couple I help with there computer and this is no lie who Refer to EBAY as AOLs online store they figured because they click a button on the AOL BBS to get there it was an AOL store front.
They called me to come to there house one day they had a computer problem I fixed there computer , they asked me to show them my Auctions so I opened IE they thought I was nuts didnt even know what that Icon was for I went to ebay and to myebay They looked at me and said OH you sell On AOL.

I use three different browsers. Internet Explorer, Netscape and Opera. When I need to revise an auction and don't have time to play around with all the errors that occasionally pop up from IE, which in my opinion gives new meaning to "buggy software", I use Opera or Netscape and get the job done. Those will also be the browsers I will be using on Linux shortly when I kiss Microsoft goodby.
The light at the end of the tunnel will turn out to be an oncoming train.

DOnt want to get this thread off topic but I recommend not saying good by to microsoft all togeather.
I install Linux in my computer on a second HD leaveing both system bootable and I never regreted it
inless you get a version of linux with netscape already built in you may be stuck in linux with a text only browser.
I found netscape nearly imposable to compile and the one time I did get it compiled and installed it wouldnt run because there was still dependency issues.
it could be different now that netscape has been ported to linux for a few years now but I couldn't get netscape to run with RedHat 5 no matter what I tried and there are many sites you cant even use on the web surffing with lynx for you browser.

When I first started on the Internet, back in the dark ages, I used Lynx, a text-only browser of my DOS based computer.
When I graduated to Windows 3.1, I used Netscape. IE didn't exist. I regularly upgraded Netscape to the newest version, and when IE first came out, I didn't bother with it.
NOW - I wouldn't let Netscape near my system. I have a CD with version 6, but I may use it as a coaster. Once it was sold to AOL it was reduced to garbage software.
IE has never presented a problem.
Linux - this fad will pass!

Dman3,
My setup will be similar to yours. SCSI with switchable external hard drives. I'm looking at Mandrake 7 or later which I believe has Netscape bundled with it, however I'm inclined to go with Opera as a browser. I'm impressed with the speed and stability it shows on Windows. It's easily twice as fast as IE. If their Linux version is half as good, I'll be happy. As far as Linux being a passing fad, I hardly think so. Now that Microsoft will be shipping their newest os without Java, I think we'll be in for some interesting times ahead.
The light at the end of the tunnel will turn out to be an oncoming train.

ebay works fine with IE here. I'm on 5.0 at home and 5.5 at work and no problems at all.
Netscape is pretty darn bad. And I'm not sure where someone got that 40% figure. That's from YEARS ago.
Netscape usage has been down below 19% for over a year or so now. The rest is Internet Explorer. Sorry anti-MS folks.

Thanks, kiawok, those are interesting stats. If it is a good representation of the general mix of eBay users, it explains why eBay (and auction service sites) always seems to ignore webtv users when making site updates.
Also, a lot of non-AOL users don't realize that although AOL owns Netscape, AOL's software comes with IE. I am not sure, but I think you have to launch it separately to get away from AOL's own lousy browser, but it's part of the software package included on the AOL start up CD.

We use IE without problem.
(also Netscape but it is slower)
Getting rid of AOL and it's problems were the best thing that we have done in years..........5 years to be exact.
Slow learner I guess...........
