I am was going to list a few albums I have laying around. Can someone help me on shipping? I have no idea how your would pack an LP or where to even find a box that would fit it that wouldn't be so big it would be a waste of money and cardboard.

Thanks

This was a recent thread about shipping them and maybe you will find some ideas here.

I have used Priority Mail for some lp sales - their free large flat box will fit the lp. Just be sure to fill the excess space with peanuts (newspaper doesn't do the job since it crushes to easily) to keep it from collapsing when going through the mechanical processes at usps or ends up on underneath a set of barbells.

Alternately uline.com makes a lp/laser disc carboard folder which is ideal - Model S-167 and it is 12.5 x 12.5 and adjustable for one or several lp's. You have to buy them in quantity however. My last order should last me another year! But they are quick and easy to use and since they are plain, I can send lp's via media mail which makes customers very happy.
Good luck!

The "Box Store" carries all shapes and sizes. I just sandwich the LP with a double layer of cardboard cut from a box.

Crumbled paper in fact does work good filling up dead space. Most damage ocurring to boxes is due to dead space.

I use the large free flat priority boxes for flat items. I don't even open them. Peel the stickum from one end and stick flaps together, then use staples.
Then slip item inside.
Then stick and staple the other end.

Protect the flat item in a plastic bag or paper so it doesn't get stuck to the stickum inside. An additional piece of cardboard inside is a good idea too.

capotasto, I've never shipped records, but I must really over pack, because I would have at least 2 inches of some kind (probably bubblewrap + styrofoam) packing material all the way around something as fragile as a record.

It would be a box 16 X 16 X 4 or slightly larger for a LP.

But like I said, I probably over pack things.

You dont need a lot of pading to ship record inless you are shipping 78s just sild into a large retangle shape box that is left flat unfolded.

no paiding nessary for 33 LPs at all as long as the reacord is in its jacket and sleeve in the 70s and eightys the record clubs many of then would simple ship record in jackets with postage printed right on the Jacket cost to ship a reacord this way in 1970 was .25 ..

If you decide you want to use a plain box so you can ship media mail, I purchase pizza boxes from a local warehouse. The size for lp's -- 14" pizza size -- run .41 including tax.

The smaller ones for 78's are only .31 each and the smallest for 45's are only .24 each.

PS: I do add the cost of the box to the shipping total. It still saves them nearly $2.00 over priority shipping rates.

NEW pizza boxes work GREAT! Pizza places in my area will give me a limited number for free(I "hit" different ones when I need a supply). I always double-wrap in bubble wrap to protect against water damage and add some ghost turds (what my family calls styrofoam peanuts). I've shipped LPs internationally via surface rate and (knock on wood) haven't had any problems/complaints. When mailing in US, I can ship media rate and save customers some money.

This kind of leads to a broader question. Who is buying LP's these days? Seems like two-thirds of my orders now come from overseas. Are Americans throwing away their turntables?

Hi

Bagsunlimited.com

They sell LP mailers that are made for records. These are heavy duty mailers and work great. They will cost you about $1.00 per box. You can send via media mail.

Cutting Panels out of cardboard boxes you already have around works just as well.

two flat panels just slightly larger then you album tape all side and address makes great free mailers for media rate shipping.

How ever I ship all my records priority and first class for faster shipping and the Item has less time and handleing from shipping.

Hi-
I've shipped quite a few LP's and 45's recently, the easiest shipping is to wrap the LP (if it's still in the plastic wrapper) in a plastic bag. Then tape in vertical and horizontal directions tightly so the LP doesn't slip and tear the cover. If the LP has already been open, place the LP on top of the cover and put in plastic bag, then wrap the tape the same way. Next I use two piece of cardboard to sandwich the LP and tape again horizontally and vertically. Next they fit in perfectly on a diagonal priority shipping box, stuff extra space with newspaper and it's done! 5 minute job tops!

I agree, "bela"...about half the buyers of my LPs are international customers. Wonder if they know something we don't? On the "up" side, you can send LPs via surface rate for less than $9.00...an absolute STEAL for international postage! My latest two customers got them quickly too...the one in Japan got his in under two weeks and the guy in England, in three weeks. Both arrived in great condition and both buyers complimented me on my pizza-box packaging.

Does anybody know a good source for obtaining those mylar protective covers for LP's and 45's? (Bags, Unlimited tends to be a little pricey & their online ordering has kinks in it.) Thanks.

THE CHEAPEST PLACE FOR BOXES IS WWW.123PIX.COM..The cheapest place for plastics is "something special enterprises" from penn. Bags unlimited is way too high on there stuff..SOMETHING SPECIAL advertises in goldmine and discoveries which are record magazines. call 1-412-487-2626 and they will send you a price list.

blueyes, you're giving me a stroke here. I just checked on international shipping (surface) for a 2 lb.4 oz. book,
10 1/2 x 14 jet core mailer. I came up with $6.90... What did I do wrong???

That was for the Netherlands, by the way.

PWOLF..Thats what i was wondering..my lps weigh 1lb. 4oz. packed and i have shipped all over the world including estonia(where is that?).Airmail is around 10 to 11 dollars and surface is 4.60 to 5.80.

that is unless blueyes is shipping more than 1 lp.

For clarification...I said shipping was "LESS than $9.00"...NOT exactly $9.00. But, as a matter of fact, I did ship more than one LP. I guess I was just comparing what it cost to ship surface vs. air mail. I still have fears of my surface-shipped LPs getting smothered by a ton of encyclopedias in the hold of a slow boat to Japan...but so far I've been lucky!

Whew! I thought I was chosing the wrong option or something to get that shipping amount. It's my first offer of International shipping and I'm a little paranoid!!!

veebee,

I have no idea where estonia is. I've never even heard of it! How's that for being a hick???

I've lost 3 shipments overseas and every one was surface..never lost an airmail packet. And sometimes surface takes 3 months or more to get there. Then the buyers are emailing wondering where there package is.

multiple albums weigh up fast and almost all buyers want surface. I shipped 9 polka lps to holland this morning 20.45 for 13.50 worth of lps. i had one japaneese buyer buy a bunch of disco and his airmail was 96.00 and he gladly paid it. Must be nice to have money.

When a package becomes lost i have to replace or refund so i push airmail if at all possible.
