We've been rained out today and it looks like the same for tomorrow. Anybody else find some good stuff?

Around here, the mother of all yard sales is tomorrow at 8 AM. The area chapter of Habitat for Humanity puts on one a year and this is it. I have told them every year (I had the chairman's husband in a class I taught) that they are missing out on a great moneymaker...printing up T-shirts that read, "I Survived The Habitat For Humanity Yard Sale."

Held at the local Armory, the line stretches for a couple of blocks by opening time. One year, after living through the crush getting in the door and finding a few treasures, I was carrying them in a box and actually had a man reach into my box to take out one of my items. Lord Have Mercy! And, he got to keep his arm...lucky man!

I plan to be in line by 6:30. I can't wait!

Yard sales around here have kind of been sucking - JAHP - junk at high prices. So, for the second week in a row, I've got a lot of cash, a full tank o' gas, and I'm ready to drive 60 miles to civilization. And for the second week in a row, weather.com indicates that the area I want to go to will have rain from about 7am to about 2pm. Wahhh.

There was a neighborhood-wide sale near me today with 35 garage sales. I actually had some good luck. I bought 10 old feed sacks for $3.00 and an old chenille bedspread with horses on it for $7.00. Some little odds and ends too.

Glad Maple got SOMETHING!!!!
DId well today myself... AN entire wardrobe of clothes from the 1940s - 1960s from an estate/garage sale for $100.00 - a closet full of dresses, hats etc. I went to the sale and there were no clothes, so I asked and they took me into the house... they were going to send all the clothing to the local charity shop - didn't think anyone would want them.. Two of the better dresses were really damaged when I got them home and looked closer, but the guy who was holding the sale is also dealing with his mother-in-laws estate and asked for my phone number to contact me when he gets to the clothes in that estate! So it is also an investment and it was still a deal...
Otherwise a mint condition white enamel 3 tier trolley probably from a hospital for $1.00 (very trendy in the bid cities for kithens and bathrooms), and a superb art deco picture frame with printed mat in sunburst design - 2 bucks, and a nail barrel for $5.00 (for my back yard though...)

This is the first time in a long time that I thought I found something worth talking about.
My hubby bought three grouse hunting books @.50 each. Keeping in mind that this is not hunting season, one is selling for about $12, one for about $20.

The last one is a signed numbered copy of "Grouse Feathers" which as near as I can tell was written by the Great Guru of Grouse Hunters. I can't find a limited edition 1972 signed copy on the book engines but based on ealier signed editions and unsigned editions of my generation, it seems to be worth about $75 - $100.00.
Whoo Hoo.

Somebody did something really nice for me today at a garage sale, something unexpected that I didn't even ask for or haggle over!

I take a pile of 8 hardcover books over to the gentleman sitting by the money box. He asks his wife to add them up. She counts them and says $8.00. So I pull out a ten. The guy says to his wife, "Hey, aren't those 50 cents apiece?" He acts like he's teasing her right? But she's so busy gabbing with another woman anyway, she's not paying any attention to what he said. He starts to hand me 2 dollar bills and then slides the corner of a $5 bill out so I see that he's giving me way too much change! I look at him, and he's giving me this look, "Yes, I'm doing this on purpose and it's our little secret so shush."

What a nice guy!

My daughter and I went yard saling together for the past 2 days......started out at about 8:00 in the morning and didn't get done and return home until after 4 in the afternoon. Good thing I have a Honda minivan as it was full both days.....some of the goodies we found were:
Vintage Childs Humpty Dumpty Porcelain dish for $2.00, 3 chenille bedspreads for $1.00 each, 3 old childrens western books with dustjackets @ $1 each (one is Gene Autrey western), Donnie and Marie Lunchbox w/thermos in good shape for $4.00, lots of great Home Interior pictures and figurines averaging about $2 each, old 80+ year old flute w/ivory top piece for $20.00 (currently at $50.00 on ebay with 8 days left to go), old linen tablecloth @ $1 each, shanee pottery bowl/dish @ $1, 3 pieces of mint colbalt blue moderntone glassware @ $12.00 (might keep these myself ~smile~), 4 pieces of WWII parachute material off of the bolt (not sure of the value if any, but thought it unusual), 3 1955 Buick "Special" hubcaps still in package, mint cond for $18.00, lots of Miller Studio chalkware in a bag for $1, Vintage "Marx" tin metal train set for $10.00, Very large stained leaded glass hanging light w/Victorian picture scenes for $8.00 (this in mine to put in my basement family room), a hugh bag of vintage cookie cutters for $1, 8 vintage porcelain Victorian lady figurines @ $1 each, West Virgina colored Frosted Pitcher and glass set for $2.00, Old Nancy Drew Book in mint cond. for $1.00 and other stuff too numerous to mention. I need to get busy now and do some listing. I love to go the sales, I have to say I am a bargainer and I will frequently ask if that is their best price. I do it in a polite manner and feel that if it is their best price that is fine, but it doesn't hurt to ask.....after all, I know this is part of the thrill of the sale to me......if I can get it cheaper than it is listed, then it makes the day that much better. Sorry, it's just in my blood I guess!
I have to say I was physically sick this week at a sale I went to. The woman was telling me she had 2 baskets that she had put in her sale and was asking $10.00 for one and $25.00 for the other one. Her husband told her that she would never get anyone in our small area to pay that much so she marked them down to $3.00 and the other one to $10.00. Found out she sold a retired Longaberger Lavendar booking basket for $3 and a special basket offered for a limited time by Longaberger, a "Wildflower" basket for $10. Needless to say she said as soon as she marked them down, some neighboor lady came in and snatched up both of them. They were bought just a short time before I got there. I was physically ill when I heard what I had missed out on at a such a great price. I collect Longaberger baskets and would have bought them for me and not to re-sale. Oh, well, you can't win them all I guess! ~smile~

NanasTurtles, where do you live?...I just HAVE to visit the sales in your neighborhood!..What a haul!!!

stacyp...Howdy neighbor!...Another LIer here..There's plenty of great stuff, priced reasonably ~ I just bought it all before you did! (ONLY KIDDING!)

I got a nice little haul this weekend myself. A 1964 game for $4, going rate on eBay (truly RARE) $50, some books, and a few odds & ends for ME...but the best was a clock I got for my DH & the story that goes with it: I pick up the clock and notice right away the sports car image, closer inspection & I see there are small lights on the face, turn it over & see two battery compartments & a speaker, so I ask the seller "what does this do?", she looks at me like I'm from another planet & responds "It's a clock!" (as if to say It tells time, you big dummy!) I showed her the lights and well, she didn't have a clue, so she says 50 cents & it's mine. At home I insert new batteries, and every hour (unless it senses darkness) the lights light and an engine revs...vroooooommmmmmmm....On Monday it's cruisin' out to his office!

Hi Rancher.....I live outside a small town on the Ohio/West Virginia border and there are a few ebayer that sell from here but I'm not competing with a great deal of sellers like in other area's......I have a larger West Virgina town that I could venture to that is about 25 minutes away that have numerous sales, but there are so many ebay sellers to compete with and by the time I do or don't find all the unfamiliar streets the sales are located on, I have found it better to stick to my small areas. Of coarse, with this being the first of the month, the sales were plentiful in our paper this week.....about 30 in our small town but when the sales have dwindled down throughtout the rest of the month, I visit 2 bigger flea markets on Sunday mornings early and find goodies at those to give me my "sale fix" for the week! ~smile~

Nana-Do you live by Gallipolis? Love these kind of threads. I went out this morning because there was a large block sale. I went to three houses and the heat was already really bad so I went home. I only go to the sales that have jewelry but sometimes I buy other things but not very often. I did get a few nice pieces though.

I have heard of Gallipolis but don't have map in front of me to see how close I am to it or what part of the state it is in. I live in the southeastern part of the state. Are you in Ohio too? We could "sale" together as I don't hardly ever buy jewelry (~smile~).....always attracted to other items....

Sorry, from Wisconsin but have ties to that little town. It sounds like you live in a better area than I do for saleing. It used to be good here but to many people doing ebay so the pickins are slim.

Sounds like there was some good finds this weekend! I went to a RL auction and didn't come away with a thing.

Tag teaming with another ebayer who doesn't sell the same stuff as you sounds like it could be a good partnership. Wouldn't be anybody in the Northern Ky area who dosen't sell glassware??

Went to sales with a friend on Friday here. It was hot and there were loads of people. However I did get some good buys. Currier and Ives large plate and veggie bowl for $2.00, 3 Nancy Drew books for 10 cents each, a set of Oneida silverware and another Japan set for $3.00 and a new to me recliner and shelf for my living room.

A friend had a sale on Saturday that I helped with. I did leave for a while and went to some others, but they were junky and one was so dirty that I had to go find a place to wash my hands. The dirty sale had plastic bags tied shut that were full of books for a dollar so I opened some and started looking through them. BIG MISTAKE-books were worthless and you guessed it-dirty!

Edited because I goofed up my face!
