I just paid someone by PayPal. She was listed as a "Premier Member" and there was also a number 4 next to her name. When I went to use my credit card it said "this member does not accept credit card payments".

I never heard of being able to set a feature like that. Why would you be a "Premier" member and presumably pay fees...and not accept credit cards?

It's actually not that strange. Business and Premier members have the ability to accept payment by either electronic check or credit card. Also they have the ability to only accept payment from verified members (where electronic check comes in). The number next to the id is basically meaningless. It simply represents the number of payments this member has received from verified members.

What I find strange is when I go to pay for an auction paypal always defaults to the electronic check option (instant transfer with cc). Even after they changed their payment structure. They want to stick the seller with higher fee's however they want us to use the e-check feature which costs them less and also gives no real protection.

HI Chris - the reason I thought it was strange is because I have a Personal account in order to pay NO fees. I ask folks not to pay me with a credit card, but I have $100/month "wiggle room" if they do. Or I offer it to certain folks.

I understood that once I got a Business account, I would pay fees on ALL incoming payments, be they credit card or not. So if I have an upgraded account, what benefit would I have in rejecting credit cards?

Or is this old news, and now Business members pay fees only on credit cards...?

The fees are lower for echeck/cash transfer payments than the fees for credit card payments. Also, with echeck and instant transfer, no dreaded "charge backs".

I switched back to a personal account. They hit sellers with fees no matter how someone pays and then have the nerve to raise the rates for chargeback protection and to "simplify" things. Please!!! I think loan sharks show more ethical behavior.

I no longer list them on my auctions either; only use it when requested, which is just a couple of times a month.

Morning all,

I quit listing PayPal on my auction page about 6 weeks ago. But do offer it with certain purchases in my EOA. Since I haven't really listed that much in the last month or so, my PayPal account has laid dormant.

I have received 3 phone calls from paypal in the last 3 weeks asking if everything was OK. They said they were trying to get feedback on their service.

Of course I took the opportunity to tell them just what I thought. As if it will do any good.

The fees are lower for echeck/cash transfer payments than the fees for credit card payments.

Where do you find this information? I looked at the fee scedule on their site, and this is what I saw:

-------------------
Receiving Payments

Account Type

Premier or Business
Standard Rate

Fee 2.9% + 30¢

Fee if
PayPal Preferred 1.4% + 30¢

Premier or Business
Merchant Rate

Fee 2.2% + 30¢

Fee if
PayPal Preferred 0.7% + 30¢
-------------------

There is no indication there that the fee is based on the type (cc/echeck/cash transfer) of payment.

Whats PayPal Preferred, and how can I get one of those?

Paypal preferred means you offer only Paypal in your Ebay auction listings (You can still offer other services like Billpoint, Bidpay, and Paydirect in your EOA Notices, but not in your Ebay listings).

Info on this is available on Paypal's website.

thanks for the info! It still seems odd to me to pay PayPal for incoming non-credit card payments when this is FREE with a Personal account, but maybe I still don't grasp all the nuances of the situation...

Not strange at all - no Chargebacks.

Two possibilities:

(1) The seller really wanted a debit card.

(2) While chargebacks would not be an issue, the seller might want protection from claims of non-delivery filed within Paypal's internal complaint system.

Regarding Paypal Prefered, one detail was omitted. You have to get their debit card and use it to buy stuff, and they rebate you 1.5% on the purchases.

Yes, the end result is the same, but I feel it is a little slippery of them to directly connect Paypal Preferred with having a lesser transaction fee. There may be people who don't want the debit card - they could be paypal prefered but they would not enjoy the lesser fee.
