When I access web pages, I get the hourglass icon for the first couple minutes, then the A request to the Host has taken longer than expected, press OK to acknowledge this message message. The trouble seems to occur just as the ads are about to load -- and ultimately they don't load. For example, none of the usual AW ads are present on the page as I type this, not the banner across the top nor the ads along the left sidebar.

I've had AOL for years but have never run into this problem before.

Another peculiar thing (here, for example) is that when the page finally stops loading, the url in the small window below the toolbar reads:

http://oascentral.auctionwatch.com/RealMedia/ads/adstream_sx.ads/www.auctionwatch.com/MC/Topics@Position2

which is wrong. It should be the url for the AW page, not the banner ad (which doesn't appear).

spaz, had trouble getting around earlier and checked the internet traffic report.

There were 5 routers down. 2 AOL, 2 in Chicago, 1 in Detroit and 1 in Denver.

There were also 3 or 4 that had bottlenecks.

Looks like the internet is suffering from heat exhaustion today.

Check here to see if it has gotten any better:

Thanks, toollady.

Three routers down now, one in my area. Hope that's the source of the problem. I don't know how these things work, though.

Could be Code Red affecting some servers/routers.

The reports on the virus stated that it could be altered to effect routers. They also pretty much spelled out how the virus could be altered to make it more effective - and guess what ? - we now have a Code Red 2 that is more effective.

I suppose someone may have altered it again to attack routers.

Or it could just be high traffic. But I haven't experienced any problems.

No problems with AOL here. UK Press says that Code Red was another Millennium Bug hoax!

No problems for me with Ebay but ALL Yahoo functions: Auctions, message boards, clubs... seem to be have been down for the count for over an hour. I've been having sporadic trouble with Ebay and some Yahoo Auctions pages since the Code Red new warnings last week, Win98 system seizing up completely and requiring Netscape closing. I'm accessing by an ISP (not AOL) and tried downloading updated browsers, even, to no avail.

I do think there's something systemically wrong on various net portals now and that the media perhaps doesn't understand it well enough to say anything but "slowdowns."

Edit To add: ah, now message boards and clubs seem to be loading, but auction functions still seem wonky over there.

Many hours later and I'm still experiencing the same problem. AOL tech help is useless. It has something to do with the ads and the space around the outside of the main screen (the toolbar, the up-down,side-to-side bars, the ad banners, etc. Everything inside of those areas loads okay. But once I move my cursor outside the main, it turns to an hour glass until after a few minutes I get that AOL message. After I click "okay" on the message,I can move around the site okay, but there's no advertising anywhere on the pages.

. I remember getting an error message the other day about insufficient memory for the "ad buffer" or somesuch thing. It said to shut down one or more programs, which I did and continued using the computer without a problem. I don't know if it's related to what's going on today, but nothing I do seems to fix the problem. I've switched access numbers, tried a different phone line, did scandisk and defrag, cleared the cache, switched off javascript ... still having difficulty.

Under normal circumstances, this difficulty would be simply perplexing and an annoyance. But in 100 degree heat with no air conditioning, no breeze outside, and a lot of work that needs to be done, it is maddening.
