How do you handle people with negative feedback ratings (-1) etc.? Recently, it seems I have had a few of them bidding on my items. I try to email them gently before the auction closes to say "hi" and make sure they are going to follow through with the sale. I even gave them the option of retracting their bid. Someone just got really obstinate with me and I think I'd like to put something about this in the listing itself. How do you word it? Can I refuse to accept bids from someone with a negative feedback?

You can block them from bidding on your items:

http://cgi3.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?bidderblocklogin

And make sure you cancel their bid first...

Good luck..

I just had one recently (actually had 3 recent negatives, and a recent bad neutral) but I did not catch this before the auction ended. Luckily I think it turned okay (Will know for sure when I hear the item arrived) but I think the reason this guy has problems is he is a bad communicator. I know some sites let you block negative people, I wish ebay did (and if they do, someone let me know!)

ahc3: If you click on my link above, you can block anyone from bidding on your auction. You just enter their User ID and they can't bid on your auctions.

I've had my share of (-1) rated bidders. I always emailed them to verify that they would be following through with the auctions, and they all replied immediately telling me that they would, etc. I left their bid alone, and a month and several "reminders" later, never received their payment.

I won't waste my time with those deadbeats any more. They have a negative feedback rating? They are getting blocked.

Had a neg rated bidder recently, took one look at his feedback, cancelled his bid and blocked him. He was NARU'd by the end of the auction.

This is the line I use in my terms of sale:

Bidders with an overall negative feedback ratings are ineligible to buy, regardless of bid amount.

It must work okay. I've been running auctions for 3-4 years, and only have had one negative feedback person win an auction. At the end of the auction, I contacted him and told him that he was inelibible to buy the widget (as stated in my description) and that the sale was void. I then sold the item to the 2nd highest bidder. Hope this helps!

Thank you for the responses. I knew aboutthe bidder block, but didn't think it could be used until after an auction. How can you cancel someone's bid? Don't they have to retract it themselves?

Thank you ExecutiveGirl (et al). I will put a line into the auctions that I reserve the right to cancel bids made by bidders with negative feedbacks and will continue to take it case by case. Some people have a "good" excuse, but others are just bad apples. It's pretty easy to tell by how they communicate before the auction closes. The one I am having such a problem with did not returnmy emails while the auction was live (wish I had cancelled then), refused to provide me her address at auctions' close and had bogus contact info on her eBay registration. Sure their money is just as green, but who needs the aggrevation? I'm selling on eBay because I want to move stuff out and make $$, not play email tag with deadbeats. Thanks again everyone for the info.

ExecutiveGirl, thanks for the link! I recently got a rude email from a user citing that she thought my "(widget) was the ugliest thing I've ever seen". I've taken the opportunity to make sure I don't do business with her by blocking her. I checked out her feedback and lo...she registered about a year ago and has no feedback whatsoever. Has anyone else ever gotten rude mail about their auctions?

jenndan -- You'll probably get a lot more hits & bids if you change your auction title to "World's ugliest widget". Perhaps your rude person would give you permission to quote him/her in the text.

If I see a -1 on a bidder, I will look at his feedback record to see if he has any kind of history before taking any action.

If all the bidder has is one neg, I'll just let it go. Who's to say the bidder just didn't have bad luck on his first transaction. I have had some very satisfactory (and lucrative) transactions with bidders who were -1 when they placed their bid. I'm with dman on this...if it doesn't work out "oh well", file for FVF and relist.....just I like I do when someone with 250+ feedback doesn't pay me.

I had two deadbeats this week ... both were over 100 positive feedback and both are now NARU. Go figure.

I've had people with -1 and even -2 win. Overall, I've had no more problems with them than average.

So long as the negatives appear to be more from a disagreement or misunderstanding then I let it ride. If the negatives are for non response to seller EOA, then I might cancel them. Or if the negatives show a sudden trend southward.

Everyone deserves a second chance and some of my -1/-2 bidders are now nicely in the positives having turned things around.

I think reading the negative feedback is very important. I had a -1 bidder but the feedback left by the seller made me think the seller might have been nutty, so I checked out more of his feedback and found he left a lot of very strange negatives. Buyer won, paid with Paypal and is now a repeat buyer. I think you can tell a lot by the tone of the feedback, is it ranting or a simple statement of facts, or is it retalitory.
