Help please!

Late last night I had an odd thing happen with my email.

I had incoming mail that started out showing the sender's address and then the subject line but within a few seconds I would get a duplicate email of the original BUT the sender's line now showed my name instead of the senders. For a few seconds I had both the original and the duplicate showing in the inbox email then the original seemed to have disappeared and only the morphed one was left.

This morning the scenario changed even more...now it is

1)original email
2)within a few seconds a duplicate with my name in sender's line...at this point both emails show
3)original email morphs to my name in sender's line and I now have 2 emails with identical title lines and my name as the sender and none with the correct sender's name
4) some seem to have duplicated again and I have three copies of the same email...all showing my name as the sender.

I went out and bought a new version of norton and installed it. But I am having a duece of a time updating it...I will update it, it will show it was updated but when the computer is rebooted it will show as not updated.

I have opened no email attachments or downloaded any programs in the last few months...or even longer...I don't open attachmnets and don't download programs off the internet except for updates to my Seller assistant and ebud.

Some possible relevant info...a couple of days ago I switched from using netscape as my default browser and mail to outlook express because netscape was constantly freezing up on me. I don't know if this has anything to do with the current problem or not.

PLEASE HELP...I can't find the solution!

amy: without going into all the details, I had something very similar happen to me today. Three different computers, 2 Outlook and one Netscape.

I scanned one machine with the latest McAfee, found nothing. Searched McAfee and SARC libraries, along with Google (Deja) News and still found nothing.

I discovered that one factor seemed to be to make sure you had no unread messages before the next time the server was checked for new mail. This would make it stop happening.

I am stumped too.

Since McAfee is pretty much worthless you might want to try the Symantec site or go to this site below (Housecall). It is very comprehensive...

HELP Even more!!

It is now taking incoming mail from billpoint and sending it back to billpoint. Also, I have a series of emails from someone I have never heard of (I think!) about some raffle in Texas. Some of the emails mention there is an attachment from me that they can't open...I HAVEN'T sent these people any emails today...yet it shows I have. I don't know who they are!!!!!!!

I have gotten several email notices that emails I sent today were not delivered because a virus was detected, but I didn't send any email to these people. In fact, I haven't sent any emails since last night...and NOT to these recipients!

EEE GADS, I feel like I am in some kind of surreal universe!

Hi Amy

Maybe go to the Housecall site that Triggerfish suggested. They will do a free scan on your computer and that may help?

Good luck! Wish I had more advice to offer.

Hi everyone...thanks for the help.

Husband went to Housecall and ran the scan. I have a trojan virus that was first reported in April called W32.BadTrans.13312@mm

It replicates unopened email and other bad stuff.

Husband is trying to disinfect my computer now.

KathyG...sounds like you have it too. Use the housecall program...this thing attaches itself to your windows files and everytime you turn on your computer it waits five minutes then starts replicating the unread email.

Again...thanks to everyone who answered my plea...I am grateful!!

Amy

If you purchased Norton's 2001, you can set it up so that all incoming email is ran through the Norton's server & checked for nasties before they hit your Inbox.
Norton's 2001 also updates all virus definitions automatically every time you go online.

Glad to hear you got the problem solved!

I got a file in pif format yesterday from someone I have made friends with, they send me email jpeg attachments all the time. I tried to open the pif yesterday and got an error, since then I have had the same problems you have. Went to housecall and am using that now. Heather

Someone named "Fran Butler" sent me an email yesterday and said "I'll write more later, but in the meantime, look at these pictures". Then there was an attachment. I deleted it right away then cleared out the deleted folder.
Not my name on ebay.

Having completely lost my entire system (including all my ebay database) to SirCam, I heartily recommend using some kind of email scanning system. I've notified all my family/friends/customers that I won't be opening ANY attachments for a while, so don't send them!

Norton's 2001 products are really excellent! I have the SystemWorks and Personal Firewall and never have any problems. I also use the Housecall site that I mentioned earlier just to check out my computer as a back up (hey, I'm neurotic...need lots of assurance! )

When I had McAfee on the computer (it was pre-installed) I had all kinds of problems. It was a nightmare! Viruses get past McAfee like you wouldn't believe but none of the trojan or worm stuff that you see day to day get past Norton's! And, like kiawok said, your email is protected 24/7!

Can anyone help me with this?

I have found the kern32.exe in regedit, I delete like I am supposed to. The directions for removal then say to go to sysedit and into the win.ini folder, I am supposed to be looking for something under windows called C:\WINDOWS\INETD.EXE. It is not there. Then I went to Symantec to get their fix for it, they say to look for run=c:\windows\inetd.exe

In my win.ini folder under windows this is all I have:
[windows]
load=
run=
NullPort=None
device=HP DeskJet 610C Series,HPFDJC20,LPT1:
MouseTrails=-7

There is nothing next to run to delete, when I go back into regedit, the kern32.exe is still there, and also still there when I reboot, even after I have deleted it.

Is there somewhere else where there might be different instructions on removing this virus? Heather
