I have amassed a lot of books that either didn't sell individually or I did not think was worth listing individually.
What is the best way to list books in lots? Should they be listed by topic, non-fiction, fiction, author?
Do I need to figure UPS postage first or list weight and my zip code? I charge actual shipping charges.

I sold a lot of books on eBay last winter and what I did was put them by genre, ie horror, comedy, non-fiction, etc hope that helps

I buy a lot of horror and mystery books on ebay, usually only individual books, but when I buy a box lot, it will only be if it's all the same genre. Since I also sell, I just recycle the ones I don't want into a lot of my own to resell, but I won't buy any lots that have several different genre's in them. I don't know about everyone else, but I only read a couple of different types of books, so if the lot includes, Popular fiction, sci fi and fantasy, or anything else I don't read I won't buy it. I won't even buy to resell, because I don't like to sell anything, even books, that I don't know anything about. Selling by authors can be fine, except their fans may already have most of the books in the lot and don't want to pay to get repeats.

thanks a lot for your suggestions. what about the shipping charges? i have seen some box lots with outrageous shipping charges and i do no want to do that.
i appreciate the hint about sorting by author. i have 4 authors that i buy and read every new book they have.
the other books will break nicely in biography/autobiography, mystery, crafts, reference and childrens.
wish me luck, i really need to clean out the shed.

My advice on the shipping issue is to weigh the package and then quote Media Rate. You can find the postage amount at the post office website: www.usps.com. Delivery Confirmation is available for Media Rate for an additional 50 cents. (Cheaper if you use Endicia.com)
You may also give the buyer the option of Priority or Parcel Post if they want the books faster.

Another option would be to take all your books down to a used bookstore. Either take the cash or get trade credit depending on their policy. You can then spend the trade credit on some really nice books that you can sell on Ebay for bigger $ per item (equals a similar profit but with less work) or you can auction off the trade credit (like I am doing on ebay right now). We'll see if it works. Also, if you could find all of the books in a series, maybe that would sell well in its own lot.

Another option is to take them to a thrift store or a library sale, ask for a tax credit form, and claim them as a charitable contribution. I find that books that don't sell on eBay rarely sell anywhere else.
